Fixture: EK Burgh 2-4 Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers U16's
Competition: Lanarkshire FDA 'A' League
Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers retained their LFDA “A” League title after a great comeback against a quality Burgh side at Branchumhall. The boys fighting spirit showed again today and has been one of the main reasons they have defended their title.
Both sides started well although it was the hosts who looked the most likely in the opening exchanges.
Ten minutes in and it was Burgh who took the lead after a slack back pass was picked up and slotted home well, giving keeper Sheridan no chance as he advanced.
Wishaw came back as expected and Leonard made the keeper work with a fine drive which was heading in at the near post but for a quality save. Then Torrance got on the end of a neat move which saw Kyle cross and again the keeper made a fine stop to deny the boys a leveller.
With the boys pushing for the equaliser, Burgh broke and their right winger was felled inside the far corner of the box and the ref awarded a penalty. The penalty was executed well, although Sheridan got a slight touch with his leg,s but now the boys found themselves two down heading to the break.
Then just before the break a goal which can only be described as very similar to a certain Maradonna 86 World Cup semi final goal. No not the hand ball, but the other Torrance picked up the ball Just inside the Burgh half. He drifted by a couple of players saw the space went in between two and slotted the ball in the far corner to give the boys the lifeline just before the break.
Half Time: EK Burgh 1-2 Wishaw WW
40 minutes left to turn things around and turn around they did with a great second half team performance. Within the first couple of minutes the game was level. Again Torrance was involved with a great driven corner and there was Leonard to bullet a header home.
For the next ten minutes the boys saw their belief that they could do this return. They created some decent chances and gave little away at the back.
With about fifteen to go they got in front for the first time in the game. Again some neat play saw the ball played to Watson he laid it to Kyle who's strong shot could only be parried in the air and the spin took it into the net.
Burgh were still dangerous and but for a superb Sheridan save they would have been level.
Wishaw then grabbed a fourth with about ten minutes left. Blair played in a great ball to the back post where Kyle drifted in to finish and put The 99's within touching distance of the League title for a second year running.
Burgh as usual still kept going but found the whole Wishaw team resolute and not willing to give them any way back in the game.
As the final whistle sounded a mighty roar came from the visiting end as the boys got their three points to see them over the line with two games remaining.
