An extra time winner from Thomas McGhee sealed Milton’s place in the next round of the regional cup, in dramatic fashion against an unlucky EKYM side.

Milton were looking to consolidate on a 2-0 victory in the previous round, whereas EKYM would have been looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Milton Rovers in league action.

It was an end to end game in the opening stages, both sides getting near the oppositions goal, but when the ball came into the final third nothing quite seemed to click.

The first real opportunity being presented to Jordan Glassford, whose header was saved well by Milton keeper Alistair Wallace. Eventually, in the 33rd minute there was a breakthrough, with Ryan Carlin firing a stunning free kick high into the top corner, giving EKYM the advantage in what was a very tight affair.

However, less than 90 seconds later Milton broke up the park. Dylan McCafferty found himself with space in the penalty area and turned home a neat half volley to level the scoring.

Milton were starting to become the more dominant side in the second half, seeing more of the ball and being quick on the counter.

Daniel McDade had his header saved by EKYM goalkeeper Ryan McInch. Again McInch was called into action to save Dylan Horsburgh’s effort.

Milton were having all the main opportunities in the game but they were struggling to break down a resilient EKYM backline. A massive opportunity was handed to Horsburgh seven minutes from time, getting through on goal from a through ball, however, he could only fire wide.

This was followed two minutes later by an incredible double stop by McInch, Horsburgh again having two close range efforts and again being denied by the safe hands of McInch. EKYM held firm and the tie rolled on into extra time.

Three minutes into extra time it was EKYM’s turn to spur a massive opportunity to take the lead, Adam Dobbie sending a shot painfully wide of the post. Horsburgh was finding no luck in front of goal. This time his effort smashed off the woodwork. EKYM were refusing to have their defence break down despite the tired legs within the camp. Their resilience was broken however ten minutes from time when McGhee’s high flying effort nestled into the top corner to make it 2-1 Milton. Milton just about edged it in the end in what was a very close game. A score line that was misrepresentative of what could have been, both sides seeing plenty chances missed. Milton will be hoping for more success in the next round of the cup. For EKYM, they will be looking to take the positives from a very good defensive performance, it just wasn’t their day in front of goal.

Final Result: 1-2 (AET)
