Cardinal Newman HS from Bellshill played Abronhill HS of Cumbernauld in the Lanarkshire Schools league play-off on a windy Friday night in Wishaw. In a game of few chances, Cardinal took theirs when it mattered, at the end of the game. Barry Maguire was the scorer, lifting the ball over the goalkeeper. Both teams played well, however Cardinal Newman won the trophy.
The game started at 6:15 instead of the arranged 6:00 start. It was end-to-end play, however Cardinal Newman started the first couple of minutes the better side. Runs from Paul Mockus and Marc Kelly were stopped, whilst a good move from the 2 played in Marc Skelton but the shot was saved by Walker.
Cardinal would continue to press, however Abronhill would get one of the better chances to score. Giles cleared an attack, and the ball was sent directly up the park to Hunter Miller. He hut a great shot which cannoned off the bar, and back out to the Abronhill attack. The ball was put in the net, but the linesman had flagged for offside.
The first half continued, and a ball played in to Stowe from the midfielder was superbly blocked by Barry Maguire. The ball would have undoubtedly went in if he hadn't made that tackle. Soon after this, Cardinal were back on the attack, and a defence opening pass found Marc Kelly one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Everyone expected him to burst the net, but the ball was put wide of the right post. A real chance to put the Bellshill school 1-0 up, and the best chance of the half by a mile.

The first main point of the second half came about 10 minutes in. A super pass from Stowe found Mitchell Taylor on the left-wing, however his cross/shot went by the post. Abronhill had another chance soon after, and a pass from Miller was unlucky not to find Bayne.
The Cumbernauld side were pushing for the first goal. A free-kick from Giles was just over the bar, and a Mark Stowe run was well tackled by Bowie.
It was going to be a game of whoever scored the first goal was going to win it. With roughly 15 minutes left, Cardinal Newman spurred on and became the dominant team. A good pass from Kelly played Mockus in, but from a tight angle his shot was dealt with by Walker.
Abronhill had one of the chances after this, Stowe hit a shot which was well saved but the rebound hut off Bayne for a goal kick.
The game was heading for penalties, however Cardinal had time for one last attack. It started from a headed clearance by Michael Clarke. After a string of passes, Mockus took it round one, and played Maguire in. With the goalkeeper rushing out to meet it, he hut the ball over Walker and it bounced into the net.
The trophy was won, and with so little time left, they sat back and saw the game out.

When the goal went in the players and supporters celebrated that they had won the cup. With no time left, they knew they just had to see the game out which they did.
It was hard to pick a specific moment for Abronhill, however some of the tackles made by the defenders were top-class. With the game still at 0-0 the interceptions were crucial, and they were unlucky to concede the goal at the end.
