Sunday best from Moorlands Reds U17's at Barrhead

Written by
An excellent performance from Moorlands 98s Reds saw the team scoop first prize in the U17s section of the Barrhead YFC Festival Tournament.
Saturday victories over West Calder and Giffnock and a Sunday-morning triumph over Eastwood secured a first-place finish in the group stage and set up an intriguing semi-final with Cumbernauld League rivals Syngenta Juveniles.
An excellent team goal, started by right-back Jonnie Walker and eventually finished by striker Dean Robertson, gave the Uddingston boys the perfect start and a further counter from Ross Tochel made it 2-0 at the break.
In the second period, Alexander Foy’s header and a screamer from Dylan Williamson completed the scoring and took Moorlands through to the final.
As the rain continued to pour down on Cowan Park, Moorlands went head-to-head with old tournament adversaries Kilwinning Town for the trophy.
Neither defence gave much away in a goal-less first half but the second period brought the crucial breakthrough. Mark McNulty’s snap shot found the corner of the net and minutes later the same player pounced on a loose ball to double his team’s lead. As the clock ran down, Robbie Stewart added a third to round off victory.
