Thistle booked a place in their first ever final after coming from behind to beat Rosebank United after an entertaining semi-final tie.
With both teams unlikely now to challenge for the league title. The Cup competitions seem their only way of winning silverware this season.
Thistle started the brighter forcing a corner in the first exchanges of the match, Rosebank keeper Atkins pushing a fierce shot from Louis Hendrie around the post. Thistle took the lead from the corner. The Rosebank defence let the ball bounce allowing the excellent Marc Innes to loop a header into an empty net.
Thistle continued to create chances with David Pettigrew’s throw-ins causing Rosebank concern. The hard working McAuley went close next, fizzing a shot just past the post.
Hendrie was again to be denied, this time his lob shot came back of the crossbar. Rosebank began to get a foot in the match, and had chances of their own but a combination of good goalkeeping by Calum Harrison and poor finishing kept them at bay. However it was Thistle who extended their lead when Pettigrew struck an excellent free kick after he was brought down on the edge of the box.
The match was to turn on its head as we approached half time. Rosebank’s James Scott scored twice to draw level. Momentum had clearly shifted in Utd’s favour and it was a despondent looking Thistle who trudged off the park at the break.
Half time: Monklands Thistle 2-2 Rosebank United
Rosebank completed their thrilling comeback by taking the lead early in the second period. Scott, rising unchallenged, powered a header into the stanchion of the goalpost after a lovely flighted corner.
Things looked bleak for Thistle at this stage but the impact of the Monklands bench was to swing this match back in their favour. Mark White and Corey Davidson came on steadying the ship in midfield and with the continued drive of Pettigrew and Declan Mills, Thistle began to take control of the match.
Aiden Reilly came on and made an immediate contribution, scoring twice in quick succession. Pettigrew then slotted home after a driving run from midfield to put Thistle in the driving seat, which had looked unlikely ten minutes earlier.
Rosebank tried to respond but their attack was well marshalled by Cameron MacDonald and Marc Innes. Thistle looked comfortable now and extended their lead when Hendrie latched onto a long throw-in to seal the win.
The teams should be congratulated for playing their part in a good competitive cup match. Both teams are packed with good players. Rosebank can look forward to their League Cup and Bobby Brass Cup Finals but they won’t be making it a hat trick of finals this year.

PFD booked their place in the Central Regional Cup Final after amassing five goals to win this semi-final against Jerviston.
Jerviston got the semi final under way and started strong. They took the game to PFD and found the lead very early on from the penalty spot.
PFD settled into the game and equalised with a fine free kick from McQuillan. The game continued at a fast pace with both teams trying to break down the opposition defence. A great delivery from a MacMillan corner was met by Holloway who headed the ball into the bottom corner to give PFD the lead at half time.
Half time: PFD United 2-1 Jerviston FC
PFD started the second have strong and played some good football. The next goal was vital, and when O'Malley brought the ball down on his chest, took the ball past two players and curled the ball into the top corner, it gave PFD breathing space.
MacMillan made it four with a curling free kick from an acute angle. Stark made it five with a wonderful strike after some great passing to see PFD through to the final.
Full time: PFD United 5-1 Jerviston FC
PFD United will now face Cambuslang in the final on the 25th May.
They are also looking forward to their League Cup Final and are two league wins away from winning the league. |

With just a couple of points separating the sides, a tight match was expected between ED United and Calderbraes, in the Cumbernauld & Kilsyth District Youth League's second tier.
The hosts started first half well and created a few half chances. Calderbraes then played their way into game and ended first half strongly.
A good save low down to his right hand side by Calderbraes keeper Nisbet meant the half ended 0-0.
Half Time: ED United 0-0 Calderbraes White
Calderbraes began the second half strongly and became stronger as half wore on. Great ball down right hand side by Whelan to Pollock and a great cross was put in by Montgomery to open the scoring.
Calderbraes, now one up, grew in strength and doubled their lead after good finish by Mitchell from 12 yards. A good performance from two teams who tried to play football without resorting to long ball.
As a result Calederbraes jump above their opponents into fourth spot.
Full Time: ED United 0-2 Calderbraes White |
