Falkirk star hails PCS programme
dumbartonunitedfalkirkFalkirk footballer Liam Rowan believes parents hold the key to creating a positive culture change at grassroots clubs across Scotland.

He recently returned to his former club Dumbarton United where parents were told about the Positive Coaching Scotland (PCS) programme being introduced at grassroots level nationwide.

Liam told those in attendance of how his parents and youth coaches were a positive influence on his early development.

He explained: “Speaking to the local Scottish FA football development officer Mark Spalding recently, I was impressed with what he told me about the PCS programme.

“I started playing with Dumbarton United at the age of five and my first coach is current chairman Gerry Docherty.

“It was great to catch up with a few old faces and speak to everyone about the impact both the club and my parents had in me achieving my aim of becoming a professional footballer.

“I have offered my help with PCS events in the future as the more we can spread the good messages the better the game will be.”

The PCS vision is a football culture in Scotland where young players are developed in a positive, safe environment, where they learn to win through effort and where valuable life lessons are taught.

Club chairman Gerry Docherty said he was delighted Liam had been able to speak to players’ parents about their important role in creating a more positive footballing environment.

He added: “The content fits well with the sessions already delivered to coaches and club leaders and clearly identifies the responsibilities of parents as part of the wider club.

“It is important that we deliver the message across everyone associated with the club and offer a clear strategy on the coaching methods and culture that the club is looking to adopt.

“I believe the PCS session for the parents will help them to understand that development and enjoyment come first.

“When the time comes to focus on results and winning matches then the skills and culture will already be in place and will allow the children to flourish.”

U21 Only Sport League Cup - Final

Scottish Cup semi finalists EK Rolls Royce took on title challengers Falkirk Athletic in the final of the Only Sport League Cup - a competition for Division 2 sides in the West of Scotland 21's YFL.

EK had endured three tough ties on their passage to the final. A 1-0 victory over Johnstone Burgh FCBC was followed by a penalty shoot out win over Kilsyth St Pats and lastly a 4-2 semi final won over Barrhead Arthurlie. East Kilbride FC, Pollok Juveniles and East End United had fell to Falkirk Athletic at the various stages, with Athletic scoring exactly five goals on every occasion.

The match kicked off and Falkirk struggled to get a foothold during the opening period. No breaks, no passages of play and no shots on goal. EK Rolls Royce were more comfortable on the ball and did have one chance but James Penman saved well. The South Lanarkshire side did also have three shots from distance but Penaman handled well.

Falkirk's best opportunity came courtesy of a trademark Jordan Gray long throw, which was headed just wide by Scott Blair.

Half Time: EK Rolls Royce 0-0 Falkirk Athletic

Athletic started the second half with more purpose about their play, forcing a number of dangerous set pieces which couldn't be capitalised upon. At the other end the Falkirk back four were dealing with any threats on goal well.

On 75 minutes the deadlock was finally broken. The EK winger got in behind, burst into the box and cut the ball back for James Cameron to score. This probably reflected the game as Falkirk were struggling to find any fluency or threaten in any way. It was a complete off day for the men from the Forth Valley.

Martin Russell did have a chance to equalise after a scramble in the box but his shot was blocked well. Falkirk started to force some pressure through free kicks, corners and throws but the equaliser could not be found. A goal behind, substitutions were made and bodies were thrown up front by Athletic.

On 87 minutes Falkirk substitute Kevin Clark found space in the box to ram home the equaliser from 16 yards, the ball flying into the top corner to make it 1-1.

Within minutes, a remarkable turnaround was complete. Zander Miller's half volley seemed to take an eternity to cross the line, but it eventually went in to the jubilation of the Falkirk players and supporters.

Falkirk Athletic hung on to lift their first silverware of the season. It was rough on EK Rolls Royce, who would have fully deserved their win had they held on, but Athletic came up with the goods at the right time and will now set about trying to make it a league and cup double.

Under 15's C&KDYL League Cup Final
Broadwood Stadium

Syngenta Juveniles FC U-15's lifted the Cumbernauld & Kilsyth League Cup Final in emphatic style.

Broadwood Stadium was the venue for the Cup Final between Syngenta Juveniles FC and Yett Farm. A good crowd was there to see a fabulous performance from "The Dyes" who controlled the game from start to finish.

The first half saw 4 scored but this was overshadowed by a horrible injury to Syngenta's centre half who's knee had came out of place, the player was rushed to hospital but has since been discharged with no major damage done. He picked up the man of the match award from the referees.

Half Time: Syngenta Juveniles 4-0 Yett Farm

The second half again saw great football played by Syngenta with three being netted by the time the final whistle went.

"The Dyes" lifted the League cup as their support cheered them on. A big thanks to the league committee for the venue and help with the injured player.

Syngenta's attention now switches to the league, which they are in a strong position to challenge for the title of.
