At a cold, wet Pitreavie on Saturday morning two teams battled it out in a very entertaining, well played match to determine which side would be crowned league champions. Home side Dunfermline Athletic knew only victory by a five goal margin or greater would give them the honour. For Lomond Colts only a point was required, with the final eventuality being a Dunfermline win by less than five goals, which would see Lomond play their final match against Breadalbane/Strathtay knowing only victory would see them finish top.

The match proved not to be of disappointment both teams showing exactly what they were capable of and why they are in the top end of the league. Lomond Colts had the edge over their opponents, as would be proven over the coming minutes.

Straight from the kick off Lomond tested the Dunfermline defence bringing out an early save from Pars keeper Kira Sutter. Adirect ball was sent to Nicole Peggie whose shot fired a warning that Lomond were up for the game.

After some neat passing along the ground from both teams, Dunfermline had an excellent chance to take the lead when Ellie Donaldson made a surging run from the defence up the left wing sending in a low and hard cross to the waiting Dunfermline attackers. The Lomond keeper Erin Clachers made a brave block to keep her team on level terms.

The first goal of the game came from an excellently chipped ball over the Dunfermline defence by Sophie Aitken. This sent Michaela McLaughlan one on one with the keeper and she took the opportunity with great composure, slotting the ball home into the bottom right hand corner.

At the restart Dunfermline Girls showed their determination by going straight onto the attack making the visiting defence work for their lead. Pars number 7 Kristy Baxter was sending in some dangerous crosses as the home team sought a route back into the game. Dunfermline forced a number of corners but the away side stayed strong.

Kirsty Baxter sent in another dangerous ball which was palmed away by Clachers, setting up a counter attack by creating a three versus two situation. Pars defender Mhairi Easton produced an excellent interception to deny McLaughlin's attempted killer pass.

However Lomond finally did break the resilient Dunfermline defence for the second time in the half. Tyler Rattray found a pocket of space, leaving her one on one with the goalkeeper. Rattray smashed the ball off the post which rebounded to the home defence, who cleared the ball towards the half way line. The danger appeared to be averted, however up stepped McLaughlan who controlled the ball nicely on the half way line, looked up, saw the keeper off her line and struck the ball high and with pace into the top left hand corner past the stranded goalkeeper. The sensational goal was admired by both sets of spectators.

Half Time: Dunfermline Athletic Girls 0-2 Lomond Colts

After the half time break it was Dunfermline who showed a great attitude and desire to claw a goal back, passing the ball around and gaining some confidence. They were tiring out the Lomond girls who were admirably pressing each ball allowing as little time as possible for the Dunfermline players to play.

After an attack from the the visitors, Pars' Kirsty Baxter once again sent a lovely ball over to Fiona Murray, who took the ball for a run down the left wing beating one defender and sending a low ball into the box. The cross found Lauryn Hynd, who struck the ball first time. Unfortunately the shot didn’t connect as well as planned allowing the Lomond keeper to scoop the ball up with ease.

Lomond responded with an attack of their own when Rattray gathered up a loose ball and sent in a fierce shot, bringing out the best of Kira Sutter. This would prove to be the first of many fine saves from the Dunfermline goalkeeper in the second half.

After some good battling in defence and midfield by both teams chances dried up a little until some very clever play from Emily Wyse and Morgan Cross, who exchanged passes, splitting the Lomond defence and allowing the hard working Cross clear through on goal. With only the keeper to beat the ball was placed inches past the left hand post.

Dunfermline’s Lauryn Hynd started to take the gam eby the scruff of the neck, creating a lot of the play. Hynd's pass through to Cross late in the second half looked to have created another 1 on 1 opportunity but Lomond's Sophie Aitken slid in with a well timed last ditch tackle.

Aitken then spotted the free Peggie on the right wing, sending over a great pass. Peggie hit a crisp cross to Katie Leitch, who hit the ball with real venom, but the Pars keeper wasn’t letting any more past her, saving fantastically low down to her right.

In the final minutes Lomond applied as much pressure as they could. Jess Hay had two well struck efforts saved by Dunfermline’s Kira Sutter, who had been performing heroics in the pars goal all half.

The full time whistle blew with the Lomond Colts players and coaches ecstatic. In a highly entertaining game Lomond proved they just had the edge. Dunfermline Girls' coaches were quite rightly very proud of their battling players, who matched Lomond everywhere on the pitch, but didn't have the finishing touch.

Lomond's league title success is paired with their earlier League Cup victory, making it a superb double winning season for the girls in blue and maroon.

Lomond Colts vs Monifieth LFC - Under 13 GirlsLomond Colts and Monifieth LFC met in the SWF East League Cup final on a windy but dry afternoon at Dundee University's Riverside Complex. In a stunning game of two halves the teams went into the break level at 2-2, with Lomond coming from behind twice. The Fifers then blew away their opponents in the second half with Michaela McLaughlin bagging a hat-trick as they ran out 7-2 winners.

The East Region of girls' football is split into two sections. Lomond Colts have been in excellent form in the Fife & Perth Division, winning all 9 of their ties to date. Monifieth are amongst the chasing pack in the Dundee and Angus Division, with the chance to go 3 points off the top should they win a couple of games in hand. On the road to the final Lomond had taken care of Raith Rovers, Broughty United and Dunfermline Athletic Girls; Monifieth had beaten Breadalbane/Strathtay YC, Jeanfield Saints and Forfar Farmington Wildcats.

The match started as it meant to continue, with chances aplenty at both ends. Kirsty Black of Monifieth shot across the face of goal, whereas Lomond's Nicole Peggie rounded the goalkeeper but saw the ball nicked off her toe by a well positioned defender.

Emily Younger lined up on the right hand side for Monifieth in an attacking minded role. She looked to make her mark on the game immediately, picking up the ball and running at her opposing defenders with a combination of trickery and direct power. Erin Clachers in the Lomond goal had to be at her best to deny Younger as a jinking run lead to her bearing down on goal. Younger's next foray forward saw the loose ball fall to Dee Brown, who curled a right footed shot off the post.

At the other end, Peggie came close to capitalising on a defensive error, but it would be Monifieth who drew first blood. Once again Younger's build up play was majestic and although her end product was less convincing, it deflected off a defender and flew into the net.

Lomond didn't take long to respond, conjuring up an instant equaliser. The ball was thrown in from the left hand side by Sophie Aitken and took a touch off a defender, wrongfooting Monifieth keeper Meg Rowan and nestling in the back of the net.

The goals were now flying in and another deflection saw Monifieth regain their lead. Georgie Simpson's shot took a drastic change of direction after hitting a defender and although goalkeeper Clachers did well to turn it onto the bar, it bounced down and was judged to have crossed the line. It was a close call but referee Isla English was quick and decisive with her verdict and to the credit of Lomond's players they accepted it and moved on immediately.

One final twist remained in the first half and it saw Lomond Colts equalise. A corner from Peggie was cleared back towards the flag, which prompted the pacy striker to cut inside and unleash a powerful right footed strike, giving the goalkeeper little chance.

Half Time: Lomond Colts Under 13s 2-2 Monifieth LFC Under 13s

Lomond Colts vs Monifieth LFC - Under 13 GirlsThe wind continued to blow across the pitch as the second half kicked off. The players of both sides did exceptionally well to get the ball down on the floor and pass the ball at every given opportunity.

Simpson thought she had put Monifieth back into the lead but Clachers managed to get her body behind the long range drive and smother the ball before it crossed the line.

However, it was Lomond Colts who scored the half's first goal and got their noses in front for the first time in the match. Michaela McLaughlan won a penalty kick and dusted herself down before drilling it low into the bottom right hand corner.

McLaughlan nearly doubled her tally and her side's advantage, when she glanced a header narrowly wide from a Peggie corner. She went once better a couple of minutes later when she met a corner on the volley, which found its way into the back of the net.

McLaughlan was now setting the heather alight and it was no surprise to see her crown a superb 10 minute spell by sealing her hat-trick. Isla Ryan and Peggie combined with the latter placing an inch perfect ball across goal and leaving a simple finish for the in form midfielder.

Whilst Monifieth continued to look threatening on the break, with Younger still looking dangerous everytime she picked up the ball, it was the Fife outfit who continued to thrive. Their strength in depth was evident when the talented Jess Hay came off the bench and immediately crashed a shot off the woodwork, with Aitken on hand to turn in the rebound.

The seventh and final goal for Colts was all about Hay. The super sub received the ball outside the area, jinked past the first challenge before behind floored by the second. After a friendly battle with the goal hungry McLaughlin, Hay won the right to take the spot kick. Despite Rowan doing well to get a hand to the ball, the power carried it in and Lomond celebrated.

A terrific final and advert for girls' football in the region. Lomond Colts were well worth their victory on the basis of their sublime second half display, but had Monifieth's end product matched their build up play, the scoreline may have been very different. Both sets of girls have a long journey ahead of them in youth football but are certainly on the right track.
