A combined Reserves/Under 19 team, which also included Ben Miller who graduated to the first team at the end of last season, failed to find the net against Spartans under 21s in this match at Ainslie Park in Edinburgh, most of which was played under that rare commodity, sunshine.
Michael Robinson and Miller both missed chances before a Chris Taylor header put Spartans in front minutes before the break.
A terrific 53rd minute angled strike from Cameron Sneddon increased the home lead and Jason Kydd completed the scoring with another good goal. Kenny O'Brien came close for Berwick with a free kick and a thunderous shot from Jordyn Gill bounced back off the crossbar to leave Berwick with nothing to show for long spells of second half pressure.
Despite his first half miss, Miller took the eye in midfield, full back Murray Strachan impressed with his work rate and sub keeper Chris Malcolm made the save of the match from Kydd seconds after taking the field.
