Edinburgh United sealed progression to the
quarter finals of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 victory over St Peters in a
tight affair at Forrester High School.
Paul Philip scored on either side of half-time to
see the South East region outfit through, albeit after St Peters had looked the
more likely to break the deadlock.
The game started brightly as Edinburgh
United immediately took the game to St Peters. Paul Philip
burst through on goal in the first minute but could only shoot straight at St Peters keeper Calum Armstrong.
However, it was St Peters that took
control of the game, in particular Callum Scullion, who posed a threat down the left side
and won numerous corners for his side.
From one of these corners, the ball broke
back to Shaunn Clark, but he shot high and off target. The away side continued to press
on for a goal but failed to make the final touch count.
Shaunn Clark had an effort wide of the target once
more, after picking up the ball around 20 yards out.
In the 25th minute, St Peters
were made to pay for their squandered chances as Edinburgh United took the
lead. Paul Philip received the ball just inside the area, and turned and fired
past Calum Armstrong. The goal shocked the away side, who arguably had had the best
chances of the match.
On the other hand, the home side were
boosted by the goal and began to create a couple of chances towards the end of
the first half. Most notably when Deschamp McDelling made a driving run into
the St Peters penalty area, but could only watch as his low cross trickled across
the face of goal.

A pumped up St Peters came out
firing in the second half, and Shaunn Clark shot wide from 25 yards as Edinburgh United
keeper Fraser Briton scrambled back to his goal line. The chance set the away side in the
opposition half where they applied pressure, and like the first half, looked
likely to score.
The home side did work their way into the
second half. Josef Smith's shot was deflected wide and from the resulting corner Conal Sutherland shot narrowly wide.
Edinburgh United did have fewer chances in
the second half, but when they got their chance they were lethal. A free kick
30 yards from goal was swung in from Finlay Wells and Paul Philip was there again to stab the
ball past Calum Armstrong. With only 15 minutes remaining, it looked as if the game was
over.
St Peters had another flurry of attacks late on and won an indirect free kick
from an Edinburgh United pass back. The defence charged at the ball as Bradley Rae ran
to strike, and blocked the shot from reaching Fraser Briton’s goal. In the dying seconds
of the match Bradley Rae had a great opportunity to get a goal back, but could only
hit wide, summing up their afternoon in front of goal. The Edinburgh United
defence kept it tight at the back and held the ball well to see the game out
and round off a good, well organised performance.
