Lewis United came from a goal down to lift the U17 Trans World Soccer SYFA Cup, beating Rossvale Thistle 2-1 in a fantastic spectacle at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium.

United lined up in a 5-4-1 formation with a back three of Connor Dickie, Barry Smith and Lewis Jopp, while Dylan Leslie was the most attacking forward. For Rossvale, the U16 winners last year, all bar three of this years squad featuring in the match day squad.

With the first chance of the match, Rossvale took the lead. A reversed pass from Jack Crumlish was inch perfect for Adam Martin who slotted home at the second attempt to open the scoring

The Aberdeen side were dealt a blow when, after just seven minutes, Michael Philipson was required from the bench after an injury to their starting eleven.

With just eleven minutes played, Lewis United got themselves back on level terms. Dylan Leslie’s out-swinging free kick was met by the head of the rising Lewis Massn, who’s downward header powered past Graeme Milne in the Rossvale goal.

Marc Lawrence, anchoring the Lewis midfield, was pivotal for the North region side as they looked to stamp their authority on the very open game.

Midway through the first half, the comeback was complete when Richard Binnie put Lewis 2-1 ahead. After a great overlap down the right, the ball fell to Binnie at the edge of the area and his left footed shot flew into the net via the underside of the crossbar as the travelling support went wild.

The lively Leslie was first into referee Matthew Dean’s book, picking up a caution for a shirt pull as the game opened up, with Rossvale choosing to resort to route one football.

With just seconds of the first half remaining, Rossvale stopper Milne was called into action, twice saving at the feet of Binnie as the half time whistle sounded.

Cuddihy and Crumlish combined well as Rossvale made a brighter start to the second half, with the latter’s shot going narrowly wide of the right hand post.

Duncan twice had to be alert to tip Adam Martin’s out-swinging corner’s over the bar, a set piece routine used to exploit the defensive frailties.

Kieran Allison’s long throw ins continued to cause Lewis United problems all afternoon, and Rossvale changed to a 3-4-3 formation as they looked to salvage an increasingly unlikely late leveller.

However, well into the fifth minute of injury time, Adam Martin was chopped down on the edge of the box, but Jack Crumlish’s effort was tipped over the bar by Duncan in what turned out to be the last action of the match as Lewis United held on to lift the cup in front of a energetic and rapturous travelling support.

Johnpaul Cuddihy - Led the line well for Rossvale despite a somewhat defensive first half performance performance, almost involved in a third goal in the second half.
Marc Lawrence - Anchored the midfield well for Lewis United and his cross field diagonals helped vary United's play when required. Keen to take a man on and impressed.
