Goals from Dickson, Patterson & Macgregor book Tweedmouth’s place in the Semi Finals of the league cup after a great performance against Spartans FC.

Seven goals - three penalties and probably the best ‘team’ goal that Tweedmouth have scored this season - ensured that their name went into the hat for the Semi Final draw of the League Cup. The Juniors set up in their new 4-3-3 formation with an unchanged starting XI after last week’s win against Hillfield Swifts.

Tweedmouth got off to a great start in this match by controlling early possession and playing some great passing football in the opposition’s half. The forward three of Birkett, Patterson & Dickson were causing all sorts of problems for the Spartans defence and it was only a matter of time before the home side took the lead. A cross in from the right hand side was not dealt with and, skipper, Luke Dickson took full advantage of this by smashing the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

In quite breezy conditions, it was important to keep the ball down. And as Tweedmouth continued to do so, the goal of season in terms of a team goal, was next on the agenda. Some exceptional passing play between Tait, Bowell, Macgregor & Turnbull set Dickson on his way down the right wing. A cracking ball into the box from Dickson found striker, Dylan Patterson who launched him self at the ball and managed to poke home on the volley to make it 2-0.

One thing that seems to be part of Tweedmouth’s game at the moment is a 15 minute lapse in concentration. This allowed Spartans to come back into the game in the first half with two very neat finishes of their own from their ruthless centre forward. First of those being a great strike across goal into the far corner and the second a good half volley over goalkeeper, Robertson.

The unfortunate Jonah Birkett was then substituted five minutes before half time after suffering from concussion. As the teams entered the break, another change was made which seen Andrew Williams replace the ill James Turnbull. Firm instructions were given at half time and both sides came out fighting in the second period.

Half Time: Tweedmouth Juniors 2-2 Spartans FC Reds

Spartans got a foothold in the game and started to play a lot better. They were knocking on the door and creating a few chances themselves, but to no avail as the home side’s midfield trio were on hand to close down a few long range efforts.

Tweedmouth stuck to their game plan through out and insisted on playing their way up the pitch. Good play in the final third brought the Juniors a corner, and from the resulting corner, Jake Birkett was adjudged to have been brought down in the box. The referee was quick to point to the spot and the outstanding Shane Macgregor made no mistake in sending the keeper the wrong way to give his side a 3-2 lead.

Striker Scott Gold was brought on in the last 15 minutes of the match to give Tweedmouth a bit more strength up front, and within minutes he made an impact. After chasing down a long ball, the Spartans centre half got the wrong side of the ball and as Gold stood his ground, he was fouled in the box. The referee was, again, swift in making his decision and awarded the penalty. Macgregor stepped up and produced a carbon copy of his first, placing the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net to make it 4-2.

As the game looked out of sight, a third penalty was given, but this time to the visitors. Goalkeeper, Sean Robertson went the right way and saved the penalty but the ball ended up at the strikers feet and the rebound was followed up to make it 4-3 with minutes remaining. Tweedmouth stood tall and ensured that there was no way back for Spartans.

This forthcoming Saturday, tweedmouth have a great chance to get into another Semi Final. This time round, they are host to Whitehackle Gracemount FC in the Quarter Finals of the Royal Edinburgh Cup.
