Kirkcaldy YM produced a stunning second half display to dismantle Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts in the AFYFC League Cup Final on Sunday. After goals from Zack More and Joe Kinninmonth sent the sides in level at the interval. Terry Ormiston, Morgan Dow and a brace from James Mackie saw Kirkcaldy pull away in the final twenty minutes of an enthralling game at Warout.

The opening exchanges were tight as both sides looked to control possession until Logan Donaldson had the game’s first shot on target, but his effort was scuffed and easy for Ryan Hume in the Kirkcaldy goal.

The first goal wasn’t long in coming, however, and it was an absolute rocket from the boot of More that sparked the game into life. After a foul some 25 yards out, More placed the ball down before sending a bullet into the bottom corner, leaving Hume absolutely no chance.

Kirkcaldy went in search of an instant equaliser, and Joe Kinninmonth was played through one-on-one with David Webb, but the goalkeeper came out well to stop the attacker and clear the danger.

Jack Moffatt was then played clean through at the other end, but just as his opposite number had done moments earlier, Hume rushed off his line and bravely cleared the danger from the feet of the attacker to prevent his team falling further behind. The save came at a cost though as, after picking up an injury, Hume was replaced with substitute ‘keeper Ben Graham.

Kirkcaldy were beginning to set the tone of the game, and were finding a lot of joy on the right wing with the dangerous looking Liam David Macduff.

The pressure soon told, as Kirkcaldy levelled the scores to make it game on. A corner from the right was controlled in the box by Kinninmonth, who did well to turn his marker and finish on the half volley.

All the danger for Kirkcaldy was coming from the right side, and some neat play from Macduff and Daniel Corstorphine resulted in the latter sending a low cross into the box, but the ball was blocked and the danger cleared.

Calum Reid then sent a wonderful looking cross into the box from a free kick, but it was too deep and evaded everyone in the box.

As half time approached there was one final chance, and this time it was Swifts who had the opportunity to sneak in front; but after a cross from the right found Logan Donaldson unmarked, he was unable to beat Graham with his shot, and the sides remained level at the break.

After a fairly even first 45 minutes, there was only one winner in the second as Kirkcaldy pulled away in devastating fashion.

The tone was set in the opening seconds, as Kyle Mark Fenton sent a shot over the bar inside the first minute.

Swifts too were looking to make an early breakthrough, as Scott Cameron found Donaldson with a pinpoint cross from the right, but Graham was equal to it and saved at full stretch to preserve parity.

The impressive Terry Ormiston then went on a marauding run, which only ended when he was fouled on the edge of the Swifts penalty area. Having made up the ground, he then dusted himself down to take the free kick, but sent the shot curling harmlessly over the bar.

Kirkcaldy then spurned a great opportunity to take the lead when a cross from the left was met with an overhead kick by Macduff, but despite not getting much power on the connection it almost turned into the perfect pass for Fenton. However, he could only drag his shot wide when he looked certain to score.

Swifts were dropping deeper and deeper as they looked to get a grip on the game, but it was from set pieces that they looked their most dangerous. More sent in another sumptuous delivery from the right to pick out Lewis Hunter at the far post, but his header was narrowly wide.

It was a rare glimpse of goal for Swifts, and they were soon on the back foot again as Mackie went clear through on goal, but Webb was out quickly to pounce on the ball.

As the game moved into the final twenty minutes, Kirkcaldy finally got the breakthrough they were looking for when Ormiston capitalised on some poor Swifts defending at a corner to stab the ball home and send his teammates on the touchline into raptures.

And there was pandemonium moments later. Macduff charged through the Swifts defence and cannoned a shot against the goalkeeper, but the ball fell straight to the feet of Dow on the edge of the area, who smashed home to put daylight between the two teams.

Kirkcaldy now had their tails well and truly up, and they almost scored a fourth as Fenton showed great strength to shake off his marker, but he could only shoot over the bar as Webb rushed off his line.

Despite that missed chance, it wasn’t too long before Kirkcaldy did grab their next goal, and the impressive Macduff was again at the heart of it. After being released on the right and bearing down on goal, he unselfishly squared the ball for Mackie, who smashed home to all but seal the win for his team.

A shell-shocked Swifts could have been forgiven for trying to see the game out without further damage being inflicted, but Sam Hortsmann had other ideas, finding space for a low shot which was saved at the near post by Graham.

Despite their seemingly unassailable lead, Kirkcaldy were still able to add some gloss to the score with a fifth and final goal. As the game approached 90 minutes, Mackie found himself clean through on goal and showed great composure to dink the ball over the onrushing Webb.

Zack More - Swifts most dangerous moments came from set pieces, and More produced most of them from his wand of a right foot.
Terry Ormiston - Made an impact at both ends of the pitch. Solid in defence and dangerous when going forward, a deserved winner of the man of the match award!

Zack More's absolute rocket of a free kick to give his side an early lead - unstoppable!
Although Ormiston's goal was good, the third goal from Dow was probably the one that sealed it for Kirkcaldy; giving them a two goal cushion with less than 10 minutes remaining.
