Nathan Scott’s late strike saw St John’s RC HS triumph in the Senior Johnston Trophy final. Ben Russell put St John’s ahead midway through the second half, but a cool finish from Adam Brown brought Grove Academy level. But Scott popped up with the decisive goal 20 minutes from time.

St John’s were nearly ahead inside two minutes. Nathan Scott won the ball on the edge of the Grove box, but tried to beat goalkeeper Fraser Burnett at the near post rather than shoot across the keeper. Brian Rice then fired over for St John’s after five minutes.

Both teams were edgy in the opening stages, with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested.

Burnett made a fine save after 23 minutes to keep the score level. The Grove stopper then made a fingertip save to keep out Ross Graham’s header. Graham then headed the resulting corner narrowly over.

Craig Kelmo was the next St John’s player to test Burnett, but the Grove keeper was equal to his effort.

Despite the cagey opening, both teams were beginning to play to their full potential. Adam Brown brought a save out of Michael Ellwood before Burnett denied Scott again.

Brown had the ball in the net after 39 minutes, but the striker was judged to be offside.

After an impressive first half showing, Burnett was nearly caught out at the beginning of the second half. The Grove man nearly fumbled Ryan Bannon’s cross into the net, but managed to push the ball out for a corner.

Brown nearly had Grove in front, but his fierce left foot effort came crashing back off the bar after 52 minutes.

Two minutes later, St John’s went ahead. Taylor Carroll’s free kick was headed across the face of goal to Ben Russell, who bundled the ball over the line. The Grove players appealed for a foul on Burnett, but the referee waved away their appeals and the goal stood.

Grove would have fallen further behind 60 seconds later, but Burnett managed to beat away Scott’s strike.

With 67 minutes gone, Grove were level. Rory Faulkner slipped the ball through to Brown, who calmly lifted the ball over the oncoming Ellwood. It was a classy finish from the Grove striker, which had put his side back in contention for the cup.

The Grove celebrations were short lived, as three minutes later, St John’s were back in front. Scott was sent through one-on-one with Burnett and managed to slide the ball past the Grove keeper.

Grove continued to press for the equaliser, and nearly got it with 13 minutes remaining, but Tom Banyard volleyed just wide from the top of the box.

With nine minutes to go, Grove looked to have brought themselves level for a second time. Brown headed Harry Dow’s free kick past Ellwood, but Faulkner was ruled to have been interfering with play, and the goal was disallowed.

St John’s nearly added a third on the break in the closing minutes, but Rice fired over the bar from 20 yards, as St John’s held on to win the cup.

On the day, Grove will feel aggrieved not to have taken the game to penalties. To have two goals ruled out, albeit correctly, is a tough one to take, especially in what will be most of this squads final cup final for the school.

Worse than that, for Tom Banyard and Andy Lyall, this is their fifth cup final loss of the season for school and club teams. Better luck next season lads.

As for St John’s, this is many of their players second cup final win in six days. Over the piece they performed better than Grove, and if not for an inspired Fraser Burnett, probably would have had a wider margin of victory.
