Top of the table Cove BC have moved five points clear of fourth-placed Deveronvale after a 4-2 victory over the Banff side. Cove, who have also played a game fewer than their rivals, won the game thanks to goals from Josh Paton, Damian Kalinowski, Ben Forrest and Jake Penman. Gregor Robertson and David West replied in vain for the visitors.
Cove Manager, Brian Forrest, said the victory helps his team’s chances of going on and winning the title. He said: “It puts us in a really good position for the league. It’s our first season in the B League. We were a C League team last year and B League this year. The players have really stood up and shown that they really want it. The win puts us in a great, great position but there are still five games to go. We’ve got to play Deveronvale away, Middlefield away and Banchory at home. Tough, tough games. Hopefully we can just steer the ship through.”
It took just over a minute of play for the league leaders to go in front. Striker Josh Paton controlled Ben Forrest’s free-kick and turned his man before confidently firing the ball into the net from six yards.
But they surrendered their lead within a minute as Gregor Robertson equalised. Kieran Neish’s shot from 20 yards found Robertson free in the penalty area and he prodded the ball past goalkeeper Daniel Green.
Deveronvale’s Adam Taylor then had a 20 yard shot which went narrowly wide of goal.
Cove’s Paton caused Deveronvale problems all day and he broke the offside trap after 20 minutes but his low shot from the right missed the bottom corner by a couple of yards.
Paton then set up strike partner Struan Linton who twisted and turned before eventually being denied by a good save from goalkeeper Keir Barker.
