Portlethen U13’s and their Hazlehead counterparts set off the ASSFA cup final season in grand style producing a superb match, which went to a shoot out,  for the spectators at Aberdeen Sports Village on Friday evening.
It was Portlethen who were first out of the traps and came close when Danny Belford and Euan Smith combined to set up Jos McLaren who was just about to shoot when the ball was taken off his toe and he only gained a corner. Despite this they raced to a fourth minute lead.
A long through ball from Kyle Douglas found Ross Burns in the clear and he moved forward to slip the ball past the advancing Ewan Paul. A minute later Hazlehead hit back when a long range shot from Finlay Hislop just cleared the bar.
They came closer sixty seconds later when a shot from Ryan Park from just inside the box clipped the crossbar before bouncing over. Ciaran Bloomer almost did the trick in the eleventh minute slotting just over when Ness had parried a corner kick.
Eight minutes from the interval Portlethen almost scored again. McLaren broke down the right, his first effort was blocked at the post and when he picked up the rebound he had to be content with another corner.
A minute later it was Hazlehead’s turn, Tristan Armstrong made good ground down the right before being stopped at the expense of a free kick. The kick was missed by everybody when it came across but Ness was alert enough to stop the ball on the line.
On the interval a strong shot from Belford on the Portlethen left brought out a superb stop from Paul in the Hazlehead goal. There was nothing to choose between the teams at the interval and this left the large crowd full of anticipation for the second half.

Both sides started the second half in cautious fashion and there were no chances at either end in the first ten minutes. A minute later Portlethen fashioned a chance. McLaren was sent racing clear from the half way line but his second touch was on the heavy side and Paul ran out from his goal to kick the ball clear.
Two minutes later Hazlehead came close when Hislop moved in from the left and sent in a shot which went narrowly wide. A minute later it was Blair Gray’s turn to shoot just past as an equaliser started to look more than likely.
It duly arrived a minute later, Armstrong made progress down the left before being halted, he regained possession and sent a screamer in the the top left hand corner of Ness’ goal for a well deserved equaliser.
Hazlehead had the bit between their teeth now, and took the lead eleven minutes from time. Armstrong fired in a long drive which Ness did well to parry before the ball fell to Calan Anderson to tap home the rebound.
Portlethen had eleven minutes to recover from this and only needed five of them to do so. McLaren ran down the right but had his jersey pulled as he entered the box. He got up and took the kick himself finding the bottom left hand corner of Paul’s net. McLaren had a chance for Portlethen in the final seconds of the game but the ball went narrowly past the post.
A thrilling draw then, with Portlethen who led for much of it, looking to be out of things before the equalising penalty.

On to the shoot out then and, with Portlethen having two of their kicks saved to Hazlehead’s one, the Trophy went to Hazlehead. It looks likely that the teams will meet again once more before the end of the season with the league trophy up for grabs. This time it was Hazlehead who held their nerve in the shoot out, but next time? Who knows?
