First-half goals from Hannah Scott and Danielle Mullen at Ainslie Park were enough to secure Glasgow City a deserved spot into the Scottish Youth Cup final.
Forfar hit back with a goal just before half time, as Phillipa McCallum struck a long-range free-kick to give The Loons a lifeline. Forfar tried to press for an equaliser in the second-half, but City held strong and progressed to the final at the Oriam.
The Glasgow side’s win was deserved when considering the amount of chances they conjured up, with the first coming inside the seventh minute. Not for the first time, Laura Jane McCartney was the architect by making a strong run down the wing, easing past the fullback and hitting a teasing ball into the area, which left Suzie Adam in Forfar’s net scrambling to clear for a corner.
City dominated the majority of possession throughout the first half, with Forfar’s best hopes coming through long balls and counters attacks, but against a defence as stern as their opponent’s, it was proving a tough challenge.
Adam was having a busy day in goals, preventing Leah Robinson from opening the scoring with a clever shot right across goal by stretching low to tip it out for a corner.
Hannah Scott and Danielle Mullen both came close to scoring for City around the 20 minute mark, with the first effort nestling onto the roof of the net and Mullen’s attempt beating the goalkeeper, but sneaking over the crossbar.
With half an hour on the clock and several chances missed, it would have been easy for City to become frustrated with the scoreline, but Hannah Scott eased those worries. With very little options on, she deftly took the ball beyond a defender and slotted beyond the goalkeeper, a classy way to open a tight defence.
City didn’t have to wait much longer for a second, which came courtesy of Mullen. Lucy Ronald squeezed a ball through into the midfielder’s path, who stabbed a shot low into the corner beyond Adam’s reach to give her side a real advantage in the tie.
It would have been easy for Forfar to lose hope after the two goals and City’s dominance of the first-half, but they grabbed a lifeline just before the half-time whistle.
From thirty yards out, the chances of netting a free-kick looked improbable, but Phillipa McCallum found the net with a stunning effort which flew into the top corner. It was a moment of genius which offered Forfar hope going into the second-half.
