A tight contest saw Nicolls Youth defeat Colony Colts in the U14s ADJFA League C at Denmore Park. The win means that Nicolls join Colony at the top of the league table.
Right from the get go both teams were eager to hit the ground running, but chances came thin and few due to solid defending from both sides.
The first real chance fell the way of Colony when Thomas Fraser found himself one on one with Nicolls’ keeper Luie Duncan. Fraser placed his shot low but it was saved with a fantastic reflex save. Pressure remained as the ball rebounded back to the feet of the attacker who would have put his side in front had it not been for a fantastic goal line clearance from defender Morgan Smith.
As the game continued, both teams battled hard to win the ball in the midfield. Roan Collin picked out an impressive through ball to send his Colony teammate Connor Milne surging down the wing. However, the dangerous looking attack was stopped by Vinnie Angus who put in a no-nonsense sliding tackle to regain possession at a crucial moment.
The first half continued to be an even contest with both teams having a fair share of opportunities. Brandon Low created a brilliant chance for Colony, picking the ball up in the midfield and slipping through the Nicolls defence. As he entered the box he let off a powerful strike to which Duncan was down quick to push it round the post.
At the half-time whistle, neither team had looked dominant in what was a very well matched first half. Colony had the marginally better of the chances but Nicolls had been just as impressive in their play.
