A fantastic second half performance from Meldrum Academy, after being 1-0 down, was enough for them to bring the Aberdeenshire Secondary Schools Under 18s trophy back to their school. It was a good battling performance with the game looking to be heading in Kemnays direction until the turnaround.

It was a windy day and Kemnay had the benefit of that wind in the first half as they started the brighter team with Murray Emslie having the ball in the back of the net for Kemnay, however he was just offside when the through ball was played.

Kemnay took the lead after five minutes, a curled effort from Rory Gauld found it's way into the bottom left hand corner past Elliott Ainslie in what was a good finish from the forward. Kemnay played some excellent football in the opening exchanges of the game.

The game turned stale after that point and Meldrum started to get into the game with Calum MacDonald having a chance on goal which went straight to Craig Robb in the Kemnay goal.

Scott Webster was playing well in the left back position for Kemnay, always encouraging his team mates on and showing a desire to win the game for his school. He had a free kick just before the interval which crashed off the crossbar and out for a Meldrum goal kick.

Nothing else could separate the teams heading into the interval with Kemnay deserving of their lead at half time.

Meldrum came out for the second half with a different impetus about them, Joey Wilson nearly pulled his school level four minutes after half time with a good effort which crashed off the left hand post. Wilson has had a good season both for club and school and he put in another good shift when it mattered.

It was end to end stuff at the start of the second half with more chances too. Kemnay almost doubled their advantage with Jai Dasgupta causing Meldrum problems and the midfielder had an effort on goal which was saved by Ainslie.

Meldrum levelled after 57 minutes, a fitting reward after all their hard work. A header from Bryce Dawson which was directed goalwards was blocked by a Kemnay defender, however it only came as far as Greig Cowie who guided the ball home into an empty net in what was probably the most opportune time for Meldrum to get a leveller.

Meldrum took the lead moments later after a good ball came into the danger zone from the right hand side by Cameron Heslop and Cowie was there to finish off a fine move by slotting the ball past Craig Robb to give Meldrum an important lead.

Bryce Dawson was trying hard all afternoon to get himself on the score sheet with this respective game being his last game in school football, Dawson had a long range free kick tipped over the bar by Craig Robb.

Kemnay were showing some good signs they could get an equaliser midway through the second half as they were on top and putting pressure on the Meldrum goal. Rory Gauld had an effort at Ainslie with Dasgupta also having a shot denied by the impressive Elliott Ainslie.

Joey Wilson had an effort wide for Meldrum on 81 minutes, however on 83 minutes he won the Aberdeenshire Secondary Schools Cup for Meldrum after a good ball came in from Greig Cowie and Wilson was there to place the ball beyond Craig Robb and complete a good day at the office for Meldrum.

Congratulations to Meldrum Academy and commiserations to Kemnay Academy, both sets of schools need to be praised for what was a cracking game of football. All the very best to the players who are moving on from school and hope they continue to flourish in their football careers for many years to come.
