Goals from Malcolm Morrison and Campbell McDermott were enough for Deveronvale to come out on top against Newtonhill and earn their place in the third round of the Scottish Cup.

Deveronvale and Newtonhill Under 16s met at Banff Academy in a second round Scottish Cup tie with both sides participating in the A league, so a good even game was in prospect.

It was a game ruined by wind and various other things, however it was a cracking cup tie with end to end activity. Newtonhill can feel hard done being on the losing side, however Deveronvale showed great desire to advance.

Newtonhill and Deveronvale both played some good passing football in the opening stages of the game, though there was nothing clear cut in terms of chances during the first 10 minutes. Despite this, the way both sides went about playing their football was refreshing to see, there was the occasional punt however apart from that, Deveronvale tried to play out from the back using their goalkeeper whenever they could whilst Newtonhill played some good passing to try and cut open Vale.

Vale had the first real chance after 12 minutes. Captain Campbell McDermott found Glen Morrison whose shot was on target however a good save from Archie Spence denied the left back.

The hosts took the lead two minutes later, when a ball from Ross McDonald found Malcolm Morrison who tucked the ball home from four yards to give Vale the perfect start.

It was almost 2-0 on 20 minutes with Kyle Buxton having an effort crash off the post before Liam Fraser forced a good save from Spence, who was to save Newtonhill on a few occasions.

Newtonhill were level four minutes before half time, Josh Middler saw his effort parried by Jamie Williamson before Kyle Flockhart placed the rebound into the bottom left hand corner beyond the Deveronvale backline.

The visitors tried to get themselves in front at the start of the second half after good play from Luke Cowen found Middler, however a good effort from the forward was tipped away by Williamson in the hosts goal.

On 51 minutes, a great corner from the left hand side by Daniel McKay found defender Josh Buchan however his effort went wide, both players put in great displays for their team.

The match winner arrived on 62 minutes and it was Vale who was to get the winning goal. A good ball came in and was met by Campbell McDermott and the captain found a bit of space in the Newtonhill backline to guide home a fine deflected strike to put Deveronvale into the round three draw.

Both teams had chances towards the business end of the game, Kyle Buxton had a 20 yard effort over the bar the hosts followed by Danny Cartney having a long range strike for Newtonhill which he thought was it however the referee decided his strike went over the bar and Deveronvale got a goal kick.

Congratulations to Deveronvale and commiserations to Newtonhill.
