The first hint of spring meant that pleasant playing conditions welcomed Byron Munich’s visit to Westdyke Thistle on Sunday.  Confidence was high in both camps as both teams were coming off the back of good wins in their previous fixtures.
The game started with Westdyke seeking to seize the initiative and managing to exert some pressure on Byron in terms of possession.  Despite Westdyke’s efforts to attack down the flanks, Byron’s resolute defending was limiting Westdyke’s chances.  Eventually Buggie for Westdyke managed to break the shackles of his marker and cracked a shot off the post from a tight angle.
Moments later, some slack passing in the Westdyke half allowed Byron to set up an attack that resulted in Byron creating a chance from long range. The Byron player pounced on the chance and looped a 25 yard effort into the top corner leaving Whelan in Westdyke’s goal with no chance.
Play restarted with a similar pattern of play emerging with Westdyke having the possession but not the cutting edge and Byron seeking to hit on the break. The tactic paid off for Byron as Westdyke’s defence failed to clear their lines and Byron’s forwards engineered an attack down the right wing. The attack resulted in a smart finish from a tight angle to give Byron a 2-0 lead.
Going two down spurred Westdyke on and their attacks started to carry more menace.  Following some neat interplay on the edge of the Byron box, Gosling found himself in space in the box and slotted home a nice finish with the outside of his foot.

The second half started with Westdyke in positive mood having managed to pull one goal back prior to the break.  Westdyke’s attacks seemed more threatening and as they continued to push for an equalizer they were eventually rewarded by Buggie netting from close range.
The equalizer seemed to galvanise Byron and they were able to mount some sustained possession without managing to breach the Westdyke defence. With 10 minutes to go Shaju went on a mazy run down the right wing for Westdyke, the Byron defence seemed to have the situation under control and shepherded him inside.  However Shaju managed to unleash a curling shot from 25 yards into the top corner of the Byron goal sending the Westdyke supporters ecstatic.
Into the closing stages of the game, the pace began to drop as both sets of players had given everything to a highly entertaining match and Westdyke were able to see out the remainder of the match to secure the victory.
