It was a dull and overcast morning that welcomed the visitors Banchory to the Westdyke Leisure Centre in Westhill.
It was a 3rd vs 5th tussle with both teams coming off the back of strong performances in previous matches.
To their credit the Banchory boys played the majority of the match with 10 players due to sickness. What they lacked in numbers they made up with enthusiasm and effort.
The hosts started brightly with Smart going close after some clever build up play down the left by Abel. Banchory's left full back was having a real tussle with Westdyke's Buggie, both players showing real desire and commitment for their teams cause.
It was the hosts who broke the deadlock with 25 minutes on the clock. The Westdyke midfield picked out a through ball for Buggie to take first time to leave the Banchory keeper little chance at the near post.
Banchory's response was swift and incisive. With 5 minutes remaining of the half the Banchory number 13 broke through two challenges to despatch a lovely right footed shot past Westdyke's Whelan in goal.
Half Time: Westdyke 1-1 Banchory
The second period ebbed and flowed with both defences on top. Westdyke's Yule showing some nice footwork and control to trouble the Banchory rear guard.
Westdyke had the better of the 2nd period with Nelson and then Benning-Ardilla going close.
The result was eventually settled by a set piece with 10 minutes to play. A Westdyke corner was half cleared to the edge of the box where Parker was waiting. The centre half met the clearance on the half volley and finished with some aplomb into the Banchory net.
Banchory went close in the closing moments but Westdyke defence marshalled by the impressive Rodgers held firm.
The Banchory coaches can be proud of the effort and determination showed by their boys and had they had their full compliment of players may have had a different result.
Full Time: Westdyke 2 -1 Banchory
