Broxburn Athletic under 16's became the third team from the club to win in the County Cup finals, this Sunday, following an impressive win over Shotts Victoria. Goals at the start of each half sealed the win for Broxburn.
The game got off to a flyer as Broxburn took the lead. They won a free kick, around 25 yards from goal, and Lewis Alexander fired the ball into the corner of the net, putting his side into the lead.
The start of the half was definitely in stark contrast with the rest of it.  Both teams were denied any clear goal scoring opportunities, with very little chances at either end.
The only other chance in the half, of note, came from Broxburn as Cameron Laurie’s shot was saved well by Cameron Henratty in the Shotts’ goal.

The second half got off to a similar start as the first as Broxburn doubled their lead within a couple of minutes. A long throw was flicked on to the back post where Laurie was waiting to finish into the net.
Shotts were next to have a chance, a few minutes later, as a deep cross fell to the feet of Thomas Haggarty. However, he was unable to connect properly and saw his shot creep over the bar.
10 minutes later Broxburn almost put the game beyond doubt. David Paton rose well at the back post but he saw his header cannon off the woodwork and the ball was cleared.
Broxburn then hit the post a minute later.  David Howe’s shot struck the woodwork for the second time, in two minutes, meaning Shotts were still in with a chance as play went on.
The leaders began to dominate the play and had the ball in the back of the net with a few minutes to go but the effort was rightfully called offside.
The referee then brought the match to an end and Broxburn were confirmed County Cup Champions of the under 16's age group. It was a very professional performance and they fully deserved the victory on the day.

Star Player

Shotts Victoria
Colin McLaughlin - The commanding centre-back, and captain. Held the defence together throughout the match and will be delighted with his side’s clean sheet. The ex-striker will also be proud of his team mates’ finishing in the final third.
Zaid Sharif - Although on the losing team, the holding midfielder had his fair share of good moments as well as some strong tackles in the middle of the park.
Magic Moment
Broxburn Athletic
Shotts Victoria
The first goal - a superb bit of skill and technique from Alexander to score a delightful free kick and get his team off to a great start.
No particular ‘stand out’ moment but the tackles put in, and the passion of the players, was a particular highlight from today.
