A late treble of goals from Edinburgh City Blacks saw the side win the South East Regional Cup against Hutchison Vale FC, despite trailing behind for half an hour. Ben Wardlaw opened the scoring for Hutchie but within 11 minutes near the end of the fixture, Ewen Gillespie netted twice with James Farrell also on the score sheet for City. Hutchie player, Matthew McCormack also netted into the seventh minute of injury time.

Chances were few and far between in the first half but Hutchison Vale’s effort in the 17th minute almost broke the deadlock. Aiden Walsh long distance effort from the right side struck the top corner of the near post but the effort did not deflect in but instead go out of play.

Inspired by this effort, Edinburgh City tried one of their own in the 27th minute. Keiran Millar controlled the ball in the centre of the field before firing the ball with his left foot from 20 yards towards goal. However, the ball flew wide to the left of the goal.

Hutchison Vale broke the deadlock soon after when Ben Wardlaw netted in the 33rd minute. Good link up play between Josh Ferguson and Laurence Linklater allowed Ferguson to unleash a strike from the right side, forcing the City keeper to make a save. However, Wardlaw got onto the end of the rebound and sent the effort home to put his side up at half time.

Hutchie were looking to double their lead into the second half and almost did two minutes in. Wardlaw who scored the only goal of the first half looked for his second when he struck the ball towards goal from distance on the left flank in the 37th minute. However, the keeper saved the effort at the near post.

City had the chance to get back into the game in the 55th minute with a great effort. Connor White ball into Keiran Millar on the right allowed the player to shoot for the near post but the diving save from keeper, Evan Miller stopped the chance from going into the net.

As the rain began to pour heavily down at New Countess Park, City were chasing their equaliser which eventually came in the 63rd minute. Tyler Bolochoweckts free kick from the side was sent into the box where Ewen Gillespie met with a headed effort to level the shares, putting his side back into the cup final.

In the final minute of regulated time, with the game looking like it was going to extra time, Edinburgh City Blacks netted to put them ahead in the most dramatic fashion. Gilviey’s pass into James Farrell on the left side of the penalty box allowed the player to fire into the bottom left hand corner, beating the keeper and winning the game.

Edinburgh City netted a third moments later to add a two-goal cushion to their lead. Ben Lovell played the ball to Gillespie on the right side in the 35+4th minute. The Blacks first goal scorer then netted his second as his shot off the side of his left foot arrived into the top left hand corner.

Hutchison Vale did manage to pull one back late into injury time. Laurence Linklater overhead kick assist was met by Matthew McCormack who fired the ball into the net. However, the goal came too late as the referee blew the whistle soon after the effort was scored, crowning Edinburgh City Blacks as champions.

Star Player
Edinburgh City Blacks
Hutchison Vale FC
Edinburgh City Blacks’ star player was Yacoub Gilviey. While Yacoub did not manage to get on the score sheet, his ability going forward and presence in the team did not go unnoticed. His control on the ball, the chances he created and attempted on goal showed the great ability he holds and the potential he has for the future. Yacoub can also be credited for setting up City’s second goal that sent them into the lead late into the game. His awareness to do this even when the game could have gone to extra time, showed the talent this player is.
Hutchison Vale FC’s star player was Josh Ferguson. Calm, composed, confident, these are but a few words to describe Josh’s performance in the final. His awareness to pick out passes short or long made him an exciting player to watch throughout. While Josh would have been disappointed to miss out on silverware, his ability and potential for the future would make you believe this isn’t going to be the last final he plays in.
Magic Moment
Edinburgh City Blacks
Hutchison Vale FC
Edinburgh City Blacks magic moment was their equalising goal in the 63rd minute. A chance that seemed to come out of nothing, a brilliant ball sent in by Tyler Bolochoweckts’ free kick meant Ewen Gillespie could fire the headed effort past the keeper. The ecstatic celebrations that followed signified the fight this team had on the day. The equaliser also set the team on their comeback with goals coming in quick succession.
Hutchison Vale FC’s magic moment was the goal that saw them take the lead in the first half. Having controlled the tempo of the match in the initial 35 minutes, Hutchie couldn’t seem to find the back of the net despite the number of chances they had. However, the determination from Ben Wardlaw to pick up the rebound showed his awareness to catch out second goal scoring opportunities.
