Tweedmouth Juniors progressed to the Quarte Finals of the Hibs Supporters cup after a 1-0 win against Salvesen CFC.

On a day when the TV cameras descended upon Berwick and thousands made the pilgrimage from Glasgow to watch Rangers take on Berwick Rangers in the Scottish 3rd Division, another game of great local significance was taking place across Shielfield Park at the 5 Arches where Tweedmouth U19s took on Salvesen.

Following Berwick Rangers controversial decision to turn their back on the local footballing community by affiliating the club with Edinburgh based Salvesen CFC and effectively cutting all ties at Under 17 & 19 level, Tweedmouth were drawn to play their Edinburgh rivals in the plum tie of the round in the Federation of Hibs Supporters Cup.

However, Berwick’s loss has proved to be Tweedmouth’s gain with many of the players having played for Berwick Rangers Juniors only to be shamefully overlooked in favour of their Edinburgh based partnership.

Tweedmouth, looking to pick themselves up from a heavy defeat the week before began brightly with the power of Gold and the speed of Douglas causing the visitors problems from the outset. The home side dominated the early exchanges without really threatening the opposition goalkeeper but good link up play between Tait and Jo Birkett down the left & Turnbull and Dickson down the right saw a number of attacks begin to pressurise the away defence.

The importance of the occasion was not lost on both teams with meaty challenges setting the tone for this feisty encounter with Blackburn and McGregor providing some much needed tenacity and skill in the middle of the park before Salvesen began to find their way into the match.

Tweedmouth continued to play their own brand of football and Doulgas and Gold continued to cause problems with the former finding his way behind the Salvesen defence on a number of occasions but good defending prevented him from giving the home side the lead.

The match looked to be heading for a stalemate with the Salvesen goalkeeper pulling off a number of fine saves including an audacious long range shot from McGregor, until Dickson picked the ball up wide on the right, embarking on a solo run towards the edge of the Salvesen box with a left footed shot seemingly on the cards, he dropped his shoulder to beat 2 more defenders before slipping the ball neatly past the onrushing goalkeeper to give Tweedmouth a deserved lead at half time.
Half Time: Tweedmouth Juniors 1-0 Salvesen CFC
The second half was severely affected by the adverse conditions with a heavy snow blizzard turning the game into a scrappy encounter with tempers flaring and the away side desperately searching for an equaliser, however Tweedmouth retained the ball well and looked dangerous themselves on the counter attack. Douglas again went close with Gold seemingly a better option to his left while an unorthodox volley from Jake Birkett from a corner cleared off the line.

As conditions worsened, Salvesen rallied one last time putting the home side under severe pressure however resolute defending from Birkett and Dixon while all the time expertly marshalled by Robertson ensured Tweedmouth were able to see out the match and secured their coveted clean sheet in the process.

As with any rivalry, tempers were flared and the final whistle saw handbags raised however both teams can be proud that the game was upheld in the right manner and the players in both teams were a credit to their respective clubs.

Tweedmouth celebrated more than usual at the final whistle as they secured their place in the next round of the cup and of equal importance for some of them, scored one for the local lads.
