The town of Stranraer played host to some very special foreign guests as FC Twente, holders of the Dutch FA Cup, visited Stair Park for a festival of youth football.
It may have been miserable weather in Stranraer but it was a glorious day for the young players taking part. The ‘Twente Tournament’ saw teams from under 7’s, 9’s and 11’s playing developments games on the Stair Park pitch under the watchful eyes of FC Twente’s Theo Snelders (Twente, Aberdeen and Rangers goalkeeper), Frans Thjissen (UEFA Cup Winner) and local lad Kevin Kyle (Hearts FC).
The big names in the stand certainly didn’t affect the performance of the boys and girls on the pitch and in spite of the torrential rain and bitter temperatures they turned in performances to be proud of. A sentiment echoed by the friends and family in the crowd as every team was met with applause and cheering when they were presented with their awards.
The support of the whole town was behind the players on the pitch and testament to this was the huge numbers who turned out to show their support on this most dismal of days. The Dutch visitors can surely help develop and evolve the coaching and technique of the teams involved but can only take home good reports as an exciting and action packed day at the Twente Festival drew to a close.
