Goldenhill BC Under 19s
 vs
Bonnyton Thistle Under 19s

Competition: G&DYFL League 'A'
Venue: Sir Alex Ferguson Park
Date: 19/05/2012

The game was supposed to be played at Goldenhill but after the pitch was closed by the council that morning, the Goldenhill management team quickly got on the phone to their contacts and the game was switched to Harmony Row's park, thanks to their kind management team coming to open up their facilities for us.

The game finally got under way 25 minutes late.  This was to be the second of 3 games that these teams were to meet, the first one being 2 weeks ago in the Scottish Cup Final when Bonnyton came out the narrow winners, just beating Goldenhill 3 - 2.  Were Goldenhill going to try to seek revenge for that 1st defeat or would Bonnyton manage to make it 2 wins out of 2?

The first 10 minutes started off brightly enough with both teams testing the keepers.  Bonnyton's first real chance came after 5 minutes when Mitchell slotted a great pass through to Anderson on the left, he swung in a terrific ball to the feet of Patterson only for him to shoot well over the bar.  5 minutes later, Davidson gave away a foul just outside the box, the Goldenhill player struck it well enough, forcing Murchie in goal to tap it over to safety.

Bonnyton managed to get back up the park after this and some great passing play by the Bonnyton players had Goldenhill rattled.  After 15 minutes, the deadlock was broken when a terrific ball by Wood at the back was played to Mitchell in the middle of the park, he delivered a great through ball to Anderson who floated the cross in from the left to the feet of Patterson to calmly drill the ball past the right hand side of the keeper. 0 -1.

The next 10 minutes were spent with Goldenhill trying tho get an equaliser.  Wood gave the ball away with a short pass allowing Goldenhill to run at the Bonnyton defence and take a shot which Murchie had to parry away for a corner.  Nothing came of this, but not giving up, Goldenhill kept pressing and when another free kick was awarded to them in the Bonnyton half, the ball was sent in to just outside the box, Davidson picked up the ball but never got the shout that a Goldenhill player was coming at him, only for the ball to be nipped awsy from the back of him and the shot struck well past the right of Murchie in the Bonnyton goal. 1 -1.

However, 1 minute later, Bonnyton were to bounce straight back with more terrific passing involving Watt, Anderson, and Davidson who then sent Mitchell a great pass, he brought the ball down well, and with great composure, rifled his shot into the top right hand corner of the net. 1 -2.

The last 15 minutes showed what good football Bonnyton can play with ease of passing resulting in efforts by Armour, Watt and Mitchell all testing the competent Goldenhill keeper.  At the other end of the park though, Bargh and Strachan were working well in defence trying to keep the Goldenhill strikers from getting another goal.

Half Time: Goldenhill BC Under 19s 1-2 Bonnyton Thistle Under 19s

The second half started with Bonnyton having to make their first substitution.  The influential Mitchell had to come off injured after being clattered by the Goldenhill number 5 just before half time.  He made way for McKie up front and with Bonnyton keen to get another goal, Armour stopped Goldenhill in their tracks when he intercepted a cross and ran down the right hand wing, with his pace clearly evident, he left his marker to deliver a terrific cross to the head of Patterson who timed his run perfect and delivered a top notch diving header into the top right of the net.  The keeper did well to try to save it, but it was just out of his reach. 1 - 3.

Back at the other end though, Goldenhill had a free kick about 20 yards out on the left.  The ball was struck well and rattled off the left hand post and out for a goal kick.  If that had gone in, it may have lifted Goldenhill's spirits a bit as they were starting to look a bit jaded.  The next 20 minutes went a bit flat so Bonnyton made another change with Watt coming off for Walker.  On the 70th minute mark,a good kick out by Murchie went straight to Armour who controlled the ball well and sent it through to Patterson who laid it off to Walker who slotted it home from 6 yards out for a cool finish to give Bonnyton a 3 goal cushion. 1 - 4.

The final change for Bonnyton saw Armour makeway for Stevenson in the 72nd minute.  Goldenhill kept trying to create chances but any efforts they had, weren't hitting the net, with most going over or wide.

However, with 10 minutes remaining, Bargh was unable to stop a Goldenhill player making a terrific run, allowing him to strike a decent shot past the right of Murchie.  2- 4.

The last chances of the game probably fell to Goldenhill who were trying to get that 3rd gal which would mean they could then try for the equalizer.  But Bonyton were to remain strong and held on to win 2 -4.  It wasn't the best game between these two , however Bonnyton had the best of the first half with Goldenhill probably having a better 2nd, though they never looked as though they would take anything from the game.

I think the result means that Bonnyton just need another 3 points to secure the league title for the second consecutive year.  With the remaining  2 home fixtures left against Rossvale and Goldenhill, hopefully Bonnyton can secure the points needed to lift the league trophy at home.  Bonnyton still have two cup finals to play in, May 27th against Linwood at Toryglen, 6pm ko and Rossvale, June 9th at 1.50pm at Petershill Juniors FC. Neutral fans should come along and watch what will hopefully be 2 great cup finals.
