Bonnyton Thistle vs Rossvale Thistle - Under 19s
Bonnyton  arrived for this afternoon's match looking for a clean sweep of domestic cup competitions in this age group whilst gearing up to face them in the next dressing room Rossvale were looking to turn around a disappointing start to this season by ending it with a trophy.

Speaking prior to the match Bonnyton coach Ian Higgins was reasonably confident and had good reason to be as his team had only lost one match in the current campaign and had lifted the Scottish Cup only weeks ago. “I think Rossvale have improved over the course of the season and it will be a difficult game for us to win but if we to our potential then this’ll be a decent game to watch.”

Brian Patterson had less reason to feel confident as his side had lost twice to Bonnyton this season and this was their last chance to get their hands on some silverware but nevertheless he was optimistic that his boys were up to the task at hand.  “Bonnyton are a great team, on our day we’re a great team, the fact that we’ve made it here shows that so hopefully it’ll be a really good competitive match today. Our goalkeeper is out so we’ve had to put a striker in so, although that hasn’t weakened us, it’s lessened our options but he’s a good strong player and the best option we had.”

So the two teams emerged imbued by the confidence of their coaches onto the astro turf here at Petershill under a sky that threatened rain and sun in equal measure, they lined up opposite each other with Bonnyton in their traditional black and red stripes whilst Rossvale were decked out in red and gold hoops. Bonnyton took the kick off and we were away.

First action of note came from tricky winger Calum Watt for Bonnyton as he collected the ball on the left, beat three men and scooped his pass over the heads of two more for his attack to chase showing an early glimpse of his prodigious skill before splitting the opposition defence with a precision ball that Edward McTernan just couldn’t reach.

It wouldn’t be long though before McTernan turned provider when he stole off down the right on the quarter hour mark leaving defenders in his wake before playing the ball inside to Stuart Walker 18 yards from goal who showed memorable composure and vision to see Watt arriving on his left and playing him in and watching him take a touch before stroking home the opening goal.

Next to threaten for Bonnyton was Greg Mitchell when he received a beautiful square pass from David Stevenson who had broken down the right but his low shot was well saved by stand in goalie Karl Duncan and the score remained 1-0.

Rossvale stuck to their task well and finely struck shots from Ian Johnson and Sean McCall as well as a pair of free kicks from Marcus Clark were sent goal wards throughout the course of the first half but all failed to trouble Christopher Murchie in goal and as the ref blew for the break the score seemed a fair reflection of both teams performances.

McCall had the first real chance of the second half as he was well played in by Nicholas Gardener but his miscued shot was skewed well wide and almost went out for a throw in as his team tried to regain parity after the interval but despite their best efforts things were about to take a turn for the worst.

Watt was once again the thorn in the side of his opponent’s as yet again he was the architect of an attacking move. His close control on the left hand side of the box and superbly weighted pass to Walker allowed him to tuck the ball neatly under Duncan and it was starting to look like man uphill task for Rossvale.

Next to create problems for his opponents was Full back Mark Armour whose marauding run and cross had the Rossvale defence at sixes and sevens and, before they had the chance to clear, Stuart Davidson had pounced and struck a shot low and heard that took a wicked deflection before spinning past Duncan just after the hour.

To all extents and purposes it was starting to look all over and the final nail in the coffin came when Mitchell finally got his just rewards for an afternoon of toil as his driven shot from the edge of the box flew past the beleaguered Duncan to make it 4-0 on the day and leave his team on the brink on glory.

Soon after they were confirmed as champions of yet another competition and one can only wonder after today’s performance what heights these Bonnyton players might reach.
