In a nail-biting match Jimmy Johnstone Academy took home the points and leapfrogged their opponents, Cumbernauld Colts Blue, to claim fourth place in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District Youth League.

Despite a relaxed start to the game, the action soon picked up 10 minutes in, with four corners and a free kick all within five minutes of each other, culminating in the opening goal from Lewis Thompson of Jimmy Johnstone Academy in the 14th minute.

The home team made every attempt to respond in kind but a shot on goal just one minute later was narrowly wide of the post. Cumbernauld Colts Blue looked the most likely of the two teams to score throughout the remainder of the first half, but neither team could pick up a goal inside of 40 minutes with the first half finishing 0-1.

Half Time: Cumbernauld Colts Blue 0-1 Jimmy Johnstone Academy

Cumbernauld Colts Blue made a bright start to the second half with an equaliser from Lewis Buick in the 43rd minute. However, the level scoreline was short lived when just three minutes later Jimmy Johnstone Academy took the lead once more with a second goal from Thompson.

Despite a lot of action at both ends of the pitch, the result was sealed with a fantastic third goal for Jimmy Johnstone Academy in the 56th minute, scored direct by Sean Watson from a free kick just outside the box that left the defensive wall and the keeper little chance of stopping the ball.

Both teams fought hard to win the points but Jimmy Johnstone Academy were the victors in a game that initially looked like it could have gone either way.

Cumbernauld Colts Blue will be hoping to avoid slipping further down the table with next week’s match being an away game to Rosebank United. With both teams now respectively placed 6th and 7th in the league the match will definitely be one to watch.

With fantastic energy and a thirst for the ball, Alan Steven looked one of the strongest players for Cumbernauld Colts Blue today.

Two goals today from Lewis Thompson underlined his position as Jimmy Johnstone Academy's star player with his second goal showing skill and technique on the ball.
