East End United Under 14s completed the league and cup double as they saw off Giffnock SC Napoli by two goals to nil in the Paisley Johnstone and District YFL Cup Final. Second half goals from Josh Lafferty and Alistair Taylor were enough to give East End the win in a match they bossed from start to finish.

The early exchanges were tight as Taylor and Kenny Scullion were trying to give East End an edge with clever link-up play down the right wing. At the other end, Dominic McLaughlin had a driven long free kick saved and held by Cameron Wishart.

An East End corner from Taylor caused a stramash in the box but Giffnock were able to clear. Another East End corner, this time from Shaun Rodgers was met by the head of Lee Govan but he saw his effort go just over the bar.

Taylor presented  Lafferty with a great chance for the opening goal. Taylor beat two men before cutting inside, his cross was met on the volley by Lafferty but his shot hit the side netting. It was then Daniel Ferguson’s turn to cut inside for East End as he laid off Jack Lindsay but his shot went wide.

As East End started to take a hold of the game Marc Risi almost gave Giffnock and unlikely lead. A long free kick McLaughlin was cleared only as far as Risi on the edge of the box. He pulled off a decent shot but it was well saved by Wishart in goal.

An excellent crossfield pass from Ferguson picked out Scullion who cut inside but his shot could only find the side netting. East End created a lot of chances but too often failed to test goalkeeper Adam Haynes.

As the seconds counted down in the half, a dipping free kick from McLaughlin almost got the better of Wishart who managed to rearrange his feet in time to kick the ball clear for a corner. It would finish all square at the break

The second half began in much the same fashion as the first with East End being the team in control and looking the most likely to open the scoring. The ball landed at the feet of Lindsay but his shot was well saved by Haynes. Taylor then had a looping shot from the edge of the box go narrowly over the bar.

Giffnock’s resolution finally gave out as the deadlock was broken by Lafferty. A clever back hell from Scullion played in Taylor whose low shot was blocked into the path of Lafferty who fired home.

It took only another three minutes for East End to double their lead and what a goal it was. Taylor picked up the ball on the halfway line and went on a powerful run, skipping past a barrage of oncoming defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box into the top left corner. A superb goal from Taylor and really optimised his performance on the day.

The second goal seemed to take the wind out of Giffnock and only made East End’s control of the game that more comfortable. Giffnock’s chances were very few and far between with East End looking the most likely to grab a third.

The game did somewhat peter out as the result looked inevitable from the moment that East End took the lead.

As an interesting aside this was East End’s last game as the team will now fold due to a lot of their players being picked up by pro-youth teams. Going on the quality of their performance in this final, it is easy to see why they have attracted so much attention.

Magic Moment
East End United
Giffnock SC Napoli
Alistair Taylor's wonderful goal. He dribbled from the halfway line to the edge of the penalty area before firing the ball into the back of the net.
Dominic McLaughlin's dipping and swirling free kick would have been some goal if it was maybe just a couple of inches more to the keeper's side.
