Westerton United ended Finnart Star’s unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 victory at Glasgow Green.

Both teams went into the game on the back of impressive results in their previous games with Finnart progressing in the Scottish Cup with a 6-0 win away to Beith while Westerton recorded a 5-0 win over Broomhill in the league.

Finnart had the better of the chances throughout the game but were denied by a string of outstanding saves by United goalkeeper Yusuf Sidiki, who produced a man of the match display.

A spectacular long range free-kick from Ross Cameron with ten minutes to go gave Westerton United the win.

In an evenly matched first half chances were few and far between with both defences playing well and both midfields cancelling each other out for long periods of the half.

Finnart Star created the best chance of the half with a good move down the right side involving Paul Waddell and Cain Kelly who combined to set up Gary Newlands who forced a good save from Sidiki in the United goal.

Westerton’s best chance in the first half came through lively winger Lewis Gourlay who showed great skill and determination to go past two Finnart players before cutting inside and forcing Ross Fisher into a good save low to his right.

Finnart forced a number of corners in the closing stages of the first half but Westerton dealt well with this increased pressure.

The start of the second half saw an improved Finnart side take control of the game with Westerton on the back foot struggling to keep possession and create chances.

The Westerton strikers were becoming more isolated as the game went on with the Finnart defence and in particular centre backs Bailey Williams and Kenneth Campsie on top form.

Finnart were looking more dangerous with Sidiki saving an early effort at his near post from Kelly after the striker drove in from the left channel.

Westerton were struggling to establish themselves in the second half as a result of the sustained Finnart pressure but could have taken the lead when a mix up in the Star defence allowed Jack McKechnie and Gourlay to combine and set up Scott Stephenson who was denied by a sharp save from Fisher.

Finnart should have taken the lead when a Jack Goldfarb corner bounced to the back post but Waddell failed to finish from close range.

Another gilt-edged chance was wasted by the home side after a cross from Waddell was met by the head of Newlands that forced an impressive diving save from Sidiki but Goldfarb saw his effort rebound off the post to the relief of the Westerton players.

It seemed to be only a matter of time before Star opened the scoring as they continued to push forward with Sidiki making several important saves, however it was United who took the lead against the run of play when Cameron fired them in front with a spectacular free-kick from range which gave Fisher no chance.

This turned out to be the winning goal as the Westerton defence held out for the remaining ten minutes to secure an excellent three points for the Bearsden side.

Finnart will be wondering how they lost this game given the amount of chances they created in the game but all credit must go to Westerton who defended impeccably as a team throughout the game.
