Bonnyton Thistle kicked off the tie against Arsenal looking to progress to the next round and win the competition which they won last season.
In the early stages, both teams had an opportunity that they did not take. Arsenal’s Ross Clift found himself through against Christopher Murchie but his placed shot was well saved by the goalkeeper. The first chance that fell to Bonnyton came from a cross which was won by
Callum Watt at the front post but his header went over the bar.
Bonnyton began to take control of the game around 15 minutes into the match and swiftly took the lead. A corner from the left hand side was not cleared by the defence and the ball was played back into the box from the right. Peter Wood won the header and the ball fell to Callum Watt who blasted the ball into the net to open the scoring.
The home team added a second from Craig Patterson who won the ball inside the Arsenal box. He took a good touch to control the ball and powered the ball passed Ross Nicholson. Bonnyton scored another goal quickly to end the game as a competition. Edward McTernan raced down the left wing and cut the ball back to Michael Lennox whose shot was deflected into the path of Stuart Walker who tapped in for Bonnyton’s third goal.
Arsenal were able to provide themselves a glimmer of hope near the end of the first half when Ross Clift scored to reduce the deficit. The ball was crossed into the back post by Humphrey, where the ball fell to Clift, who finished well with power.
At half time Bonnyton will be very pleased with their performance as they have totally dominated the game and could have scored more than the three they have. Arsenal have offered little but the goal they got should lift their spirits and their game going into the second half.
Half Time: Bonnyton Thistle 3 – 1 Arsenal
As the second half began Bonnyton picked up where they had left off in the first half. Craig Patterson won a penalty for the home side and took the kick himself. He sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and increased his team’s lead to three goals.
Bonnyton continued to attack and were able to get another goal from a corner. Edward McTernan took the kick and crossed towards Stuart Davidson who powered his header passed Arsenal’s keeper. McTernan was able to get himself on the score sheet with Bonnyton’s next attack. He went on a run down the left wing and cut in onto his right foot inside the area where he finished well at the near post.
In the final 10 minutes of the game there was still time left for a goal for each side. Firstly, Michael Lennox scored Bonnyton’s seventh of the day. Lennox took a lovely touch inside the area which enabled him to lob the keeper.
The final attack of the game saw Arsenal get themselves another goal. They won a corner on the left hand side which was crossed towards the back post by John Davis. Mark Logan rose highest and saw his header crash off the bar and into the net. The full time whistle went shortly after this goal.
Bonnyton progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup.
Bonnyton will be very happy with their performance as they controlled the game from beginning to end. They are looking to retain the cup and looked like potential champions based on their performance today. Arsenal, on the other hand, will be disappointed with how they played in the tie. They did not show up and could have conceded many more goals than they actually did.
