Holy Rood needed no time to warm up on a freezing afternoon. Only two minutes had passed when Sean Alexander latched onto a looped ball to fire past the Broughton goalkeeper. Soon after, Benji Edwards, who impressed throughout, doubled the lead with a tap in after Louis Norris fumbled the original shot.
Broughton improved and passed the ball about comfortably without threatening the Holy Rood goal. Azad Okan picked up the ball and ran at the defence and was brought down outside the box, but set pieces rarely troubled the solid Holy Rood back line. Shortly after, Danny Cameron saw his acrobatic effort go narrowly wide.
But it was the away team who added to their tally, and Peter Wood, having gone close with a shot just minutes earlier, received the ball from ten yards and fired low past the goalkeeper after a good passing move.
Cameron and Daniel McIvor tried long range shots as Broughton seeked a way back into the game, before Holy Rood put the result beyond any doubt ten minutes before the half-time break. Jordan Sinclair swung in a cross from the left flank and Edwards was at the far post to divert the ball into the net for 4-0.
As the momentum swung once more, Blair Atkinson set up McIvor after some good work down the right, but the Broughton striker couldn’t find the target with a left-footed shot, and the referee brought the first half to a close.

The second half started slowly, with neither side being able to control the match, but Wood shot wide after being played through by Darren Gallagher.
Broughton then had a great chance of their own. Duncan Player drove forward from midfield and released Kris Buchannan, and the midfielder cut the ball back to McIvor whose effort went agonisingly past the post.
Next up, Callum McGrouther forced an excellent save from Neil Fairnie who refused to be beaten.
Some neat passing led to a fifth Holy Rood goal. Jack Brien got possession on the edge of the box and sent a delightful chip over the the goalkeeper to score the only goal of a drab second half.
The result perhaps flattered Holy Rood but they were clinical and defended resolutely throughout to record a convincing win.
