West Region survived a late South West comeback and ran out 4-3 winners in defence of the Inter Regional trophy at Harmony Row on Sunday night.

Four first half goals from Rowan Gibson,  Marc Macbeth, Lewis Patterson and Greg Murphy looked to put the West Region out of sight, but a spirited second half comeback - that saw three goals in four minutes - with a double from Gavin Todd and a strike by Ben Bonner - setting up a thrilling climax.

It took just two minutes for the opening goal of the game to arrive. Gibson received the ball of the right hand side of the area and, with plenty still to do, turned two defenders and rifled a low shot under Danny Gray at his near post.

On seven minutes, West had the perfect opportunity to add second when Macbeth crossed for Kal McNaught at the edge of the area, but he blazed his shot high over the bar.

A minute later, the home side did double their lead. Macbeth latched on to a perfectly weighted ball played up the line and kept his composure to cooly slot past Gray.

Having taken control of the game, five minutes later West added a third.  Christopher McLeod, whose pace was causing all sorts of problems for the South West defence, crossed his free kick into the box and West Captain Lewis Patterson rose well and his looping header nestled in the back of the net for the third time.

Midway through the first half, West extended their advantage as they looked to all but seal the victory. It was another corner and another header. Patterson again connected with a header but striker Greg Murphy was on hand to get the last touch, flicking Patterson’s downward header high into the net.

Fives minutes before half time, West midfielder Craig Corbet then tried his luck with an outrageous shot from 30 yards cannoned off the bar, but his side still went into the break four goals to the good.

After half time, it looked as if it would be more of the same as the confidence in West’s passing and movement continued to improve. A bursting run from the pacey McLeod saw him pick out Gibson who back heeled to Daniel Raza, but his curling effort with outside of boot went narrowly over.

Just after the hour mark, the South West revival began. Gavin Todd proved the ball towards goal and it took a deflection off goalkeeper Steven Mooney before nestling in the bottom corner to reduce the deficit.

Less than three minutes seconds later, South West added a quick second. The ball broke to Todd on the right hand side of the box, and he brilliantly chested the ball and volleyed past Mooney as his side desperately looked for a way back into the match.

Two minutes later, Bonner ran on to a perfectly threaded through ball and chipped Mooney from the edge of the area to set up a grandstand finish.

The comeback was nearly completed on the stroke of full time when Bonner’s shot was rebounded off the post,  narrowly bounced away to safety to ensure reigning champions West started their defence of the title with a win.

Lewis Patterson. Everything came through the West captain and his forward thinking play and passing as well as his organisation of his side were instrumental in seeing out the win.
Callum Peters. The composed centre half was the stand out despite conceding four goals and was instrumental in breaking down attacks and seemed comfortable on the ball.

Rowan Gibson's second minute opener showed true skill to turn and hit the ball on the half volley. Craig Corbet's ambitious shot from 30 plus yards was also worthy of a goal.
The general fight, determination and spirit to pull the score back to 4-3 having been 4-0 down at half time was trememndous.
