After a long absence from football due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cambuslang FC and St Patrick’s faced off in an enthralling friendly encounter at Strathclyde Park.
Both sides had numerous shots on target in the opening phases of play, as spectators watched from outside the pitch and socially distanced from both teams.
Each side held the lead during periods of the game, with both having their chances to win but neither side could hold on.
Irrespective of the scoreline, both sides produced a brilliant advert for youth football as they prepare to get back to full fitness for the upcoming season.
Cambuslang FC’s manager, Kenny Reilly, gave his thoughts on his team’s performance after the match.
“It was a really good game,” he said. “We were down 2-0 after the first twenty minutes and we were quiet then we got ourselves in the game and got back to 2-2.”
“We then went 3-2 in front then back to 3-3 then we got the fourth but conceded making it 4-4 but I thought it was a fair result.”
After months without competitive football, both teams’ lethargic legs showed towards the latter stages of the game.
“We were still trying to get up to fitness, and it’s the same for our opposition St Pats who played really well today along with us.”
It was a game full of goals, but Cambuslang defender Liam Reilly took the plaudits from his coaches.
“Our man of the match was Liam Reilly who was our centre-half. He played really well and set up two goals so yeah a great performance all round.”
With new guidelines to follow for youth football, the gaffer admitted it has been difficult to ensure everyone follows the rules.
“Yes to an extent, as a manager you need to make sure everybody abides by the SYFA rules but some of the rules are conflicting between both parties. Overall, everybody knows what they’ve got to do and does it well.”
YFS wishes both sides good luck for the season ahead!
