It was a sunny yet windy morning at Stepford Football Centre as Carmyle United hosted East Kilbride Colts in the U16 Glasgow and District YFL Division 2.
It didn’t take too long for the breakthrough as East Kilbride Colts were awarded a free kick in shooting range. Lee Donnelly struck gold as his set piece caressed the top right corner to grab his 11th goal in four games and to put the away side 1-0 up.
After the early goal, the chances came flooding in for Carmyl. The first came from Adam Cox, but a phenomenal stop from East Kilbride Colts goalkeeper Adam Walker kept the visitors in front.
Another opportunity came from a corner kick. Declan Turnbull’s inswinger caused chaos in the East Kilbride Colts penalty area, and then inside the six-yard box. It was a golden opportunity for frontman Jack Thomson, but he couldn’t quite find the cherry on top.
Just before the break was one more opportunity for EK as goalscorer Lee Donnelly was at it again from a free kick, however, this time denied by the crossbar.
Half-Time: Carmyle United 0-1 EK Colts
The second half was up and running as William McAlpine doubled the travelling team’s lead from a bursting run down the right and then the finish, finding the Carmyle near post to double East Kilbride Colts lead.
It was a quieter second period with not many chances. Most of the possession was with EK, who had a few more attempts. Donnelly again caused havoc down the left and put in a ball across the goal mouth, but Jamie Maxwell couldn’t put it in the back of the net.
For the remainder of the second half, there were no clear-cut chances towards either goalkeeper, which meant EK Colts went home with the spoils to get their eighth win of the league campaign as it finished 2-0 at Stepford Football Centre.

The skipper was comfortable on and off the ball. He denied any more goals as his physical presence kept the scoreline reasonable.
East Kilbride Colts Player of the Match: Lee Donnelly
Of course, it had to be Donnelly. The early free kick set the tone for a dominant display from EK. His runs down the left were the out ball for the away side as he kept causing trouble for Carmyle’s back line.
Carmyle United Magic Moment:
United’s best chance of the match was Adam Cox’s lightning run down the flank, saved by Adam Walker.
East Kilbride Colts Magic Moment:
It has to be the early free kick from Lee Donnelly, finished expertly into the opposite top corner, and it did help EK have the upper hand throughout the first half.
