A brace each from Lewis Kynoch and Grant Chappell proved decisive as Liberton hit five past Bonnyrigg in this Polar Foods Cup Final.
Liberton looked in complete control throughout and took an early lead when Kynoch slid in to convert a deep cross unmarked in the area.
Bonnyrigg had their chances to equalise and only thanks to the heroics of Whitelaw in the Liberton goal the game could have had a very different outcome. Rose thought they had the ball in the net shortly after only to have it chalked off for a foul on the young keeper.
Liberton took heed of the warning and took the game to their opponents with Kynoch helping himself to his just before the break when he ran onto Gilhooley’s through ball to coolly slot past the on-coming keeper.
As the second half got under way Liberton continued their pressure, barley giving their opponents a sniff, despite Bonnyrigg feeling aggrieved at another disallowed goal thanks to a late offside flag, but in truth it was the correct decision.
Liberton increased their lead when the impressive Dickson, played a pinpoint pass for Chappell to run on to and calmly open his account. It was just desserts for the young front man whose work and endeavour was commendable throughout.
Bonnyrigg huffed and puffed but with their front men looking increasingly isolated they couldn’t get that all importnant break through. When they did get a clear chance on goal, they were met by the impressive Whitelaw in the Liberton goal, who twice denied Bonnyrigg with point blank saves to increase the Bonnyrigg frontmen.
Liberton secured an impressive victory late on when Weir converted from the spot following a dubious hand-ball decision and Chappell got his name on the scoresheet with the final attack when he ran through the middle unchallenged to round off an impressive display.
