A cup final not short on goalmouth action as these two Under 14 sides battled for the Pilmar Smith Cup. With a first half hat trick and a red card thrown into the mix, it was Liberton United who ran out eventual winners, securing a 5-3 victory at Bonnyrigg’s New Dundas Park.
 Liberton’s pint sized Grant Chappell was first to set the pace for this cup final, a quick run down the right hand side leading to his attempt at goal going narrowly wide of the right hand post. His cohort Sean Gilhooley was first to open the scoring five minutes in, after a failure to clear the ball in the Easthouses box allowed Gilhooley to slot the ball low past goalkeeper Greg Duffy’s left.
The bright start by Liberton continued as the excellent Gilhooley got his second, capitalising on a parry from a Cameron Oag free kick, converting the rebound and making it two.
Easthouses’ response to the two goal deficit was instant. After a quick break, a ball from the right byline was played to Jason Aitken, who maintained composure to direct the ball into the Liberton net.
Despite their eager attempts to draw level, Easthouses downfall was sloppy defending, leaving them vulnerable to Liberton’s speedy attack, led by that man Gilhooley. He soon got his first half hat trick as miscommunication between David Turnbull & keeper Duffy allowed Gilhooley through to score, putting Liberton 3-1 up.
It was five minutes from time when Easthouses rallied and grabbed their second. Aitken’s cross into the Liberton box allowed Greg Bonar to get his head to it, knocking it past Lewis Whitelaw to take them one behind going into half time.

Connor Darling for Easthouses was the man of the moment midway into the second with a lovely lofted strike outside the box which sailed over the head of the Liberton stopper, levelling match.
As the pressure built and the anticipation of extra time began looming, a resultant messy tackle saw a red card, Liberton now down to ten men, an unfortunate end to an excellent display by Gilhooley.
They say playing against ten can be harder than the eleven, and Easthouses bore the brunt of this maxim as Liberton took the lead again; Ben Pritchett was quick off his mark to follow up on a through ball. Just as Easthouses were recovering from the goal, Pritchett poked another under the keeper, doubling the Libby lead.
With five minutes to go Liberton sat back and defended deep, doing enough to clear their lines till the final whistle, seeing them run out winners of the Pilmar Smith Cup 2011/12.

Whilst the second half didn’t have the same sprightly start as the first, both teams’ goalkeepers did well to keep half-chances at bay. Liberton’s Lee McMullan was closest to scoring at the restart, with an excellent strike across goal, forcing a solid parry from Duffy.
