Harry Craig speaks to YFS after signing first professional contract at Montrose FC

Harry Craig recently signed his first professional contract with SPFL League 1 side Montrose FC. The local 18-year-old lad from Montrose has risen the ranks from Grassroots football on a Sunday to Montrose FC.

From following Montrose up and down the country then the next season he made his professional debut in December of 2023. Harry is a great inspiration to many people.

We were delighted to get a chance to speak with Harry about his journey from Grassroots to Pro.

Harry, how excited are you to have signed your first team contract with Montrose FC at just 18 years old?

“Absolutely buzzing to sign the contract with Montrose. Growing up in Montrose, playing for the academy and signing for my boyhood club, couldn’t feel better.”

Now, talk us through your own journey in football from grassroots to where you are now?

“I started off at Montrose Youth 2007, and early on started training with Dundee United, I then signed at the age of 10 for and played there for 2 years, then I was unfortunately released and went to Forfar Boys club, for a season, then back to Montrose youth for a couple of years and signed on at Montrose Fc Academy when I was 15”

What key factors have helped you develop into the player you are today?

“It takes a lot of effort, commitment and dedication. Practice is a key thing I’ve learned so far, whether it’s just working on your touch or weak foot, you see improvements, and so do others.”

What is some of the best advice you’ve received from a coach, and how much did that advice benefit you?

“I’ve had a lot of advice from a lot of people, players who have played at the top level of Scotland. Coaches too. The best part of advice I think I’ve heard was always enjoy your football.”

What advice would you give to grassroots players who aspire to go pro in football?

“The advice I’d give to younger players is to always enjoy when you’re playing football, whether it’s training or games.”

It was a real pleasure speaking with Harry and hearing about his inspiring journey from grassroots to professional football. We wish him every success as he continues to grow with Montrose FC and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

His story is also a great reminder of just how important grassroots football is, providing the foundation, opportunities, and enjoyment that help young players develop and chase their dreams.
