Larkhall breeze past Milton on their way to the title

We arrived at Larkhall on a cold brisk windy morning.

The match was between two contenders for the CLYFA Division A league title, as we grew closer to kick off you could feel the anticipation both Larkhall and Milton looked well prepared for battle.

The match kicked off and for the first 5 minutes, the game was midfield-heavy with no real chances of note.

Larkhall did make the breakthrough a short time later with a penalty being awarded for a foul on Nelson. He drove into the box and was upended by the Milton defender leaving the ref with no other option than to give the penalty.

O’Reilly stepped up and scored beating the keeper low to his right. The game was now opening up and Milton equalised right away.

A defensive mistake led to Campbell picking the ball up on the halfway line and driving through one-on-one with the keeper. He picked his spot and dispatched it calmly into the top corner 1-1.

Next was the goal of the game by Cooper. He picked the ball up just inside the Milton half and he drove into the space in front and decided to try his luck from range. The ball sailed over the keeper and into the net.

At this point in the match, Larkhall were putting pressure on Milton’s defence and this eventually led to a third goal for the hosts.

The penalty came around similarly to the first penalty with Nelson causing the Milton defence all sorts of problems.

Milton management did not agree with this award and felt hard done by. O’Reilly once again stepped up. This time the keeper got a hand to it, but the ball ended up in the net.

Larkhall got their fourth with an unfortunate headed own goal for the Milton defender.

At this point, it looked like the game was over for Milton but they battled hard through the whole match and got another back through Milton’s star boy Campbell scoring a free kick just before half-time.

The second half kicked off and Larkhall got straight back into their rhythm scoring a fifth right after half-time. They were awarded an indirect free kick from a pass back which the Milton keeper picked up.

After three attempts Oreilly laid the ball back for Smith to smash home.

Larkhall continued to apply pressure on Milton’s defence and controlled most of the second half scoring three more goals through Sked, Smith and another unlucky own goal.

Although the score will be a hard one to take for Milton they never gave up and battled through to the final whistle.

With this victory, Larkhall is another step closer to winning the league title. All the best to both teams for the rest of the season.
