Tír Conaill FC is a new community football side based in the South Side of Glasgow, aiming to offer more than just another place to play football.
The club has been founded with an Irish twist, inspired by the ancient Kingdom of Tír Chonaill in County Donegal.
The club hopes to bring people together, encourage kids to stay active, and contribute to lifelong memories for both players and families – with their official mission being ‘build players, build people, and build community’.
The identity of the club is deeply personal to founder Darren O’Donnell.
YFS asked O’Donnell to explain the inspiration behind the vision.
“My grandparents were from Donegal, and I visited many times as a young boy.
“The O’Donnell name and coat of arms have strong historical links to Tír Chonaill, so the club’s identity reflects my family heritage and the strong community spirit associated with Donegal.
“That personal connection is what makes the club distinctive.”
The coat of arms can be viewed as part of the club’s badge.
The ambitions of the club also stretch well beyond, Tír Conaill FC will work closely alongside Tír Conaill Harps GAC and GAA Scotland to demonstrate how football and the Gaelic game can work alongside each other and strengthen communities further.
They will also be a part of developing Pearse Park into a sporting hub for all to access.
When asked about his new venture, club founder Darren O’Donnell said: “I’m excited to create something that gives local children a fun, safe and welcoming place to play football.”
“We want to build more than just a club – we want to build a community where every child feels valued, develops confidence and enjoys the game.
“We also have a vision to keep building our age groups to hopefully one day have senior teams.”
O’Donnell hopes the club will eventually have three stages, The Wee Fawns (3-5), The Fawns, (6-17) and The Red Deer (18+), creating opportunities for all.
As preparations continue, the club is seeking sponsorship to assist them in starting their journey.
Registration is open for their open sessions for 2016 & 2017 players on the 10th and 12th of August at Eastfield Lifestyle in Rutherglen.
