Oban Saints U14s have drawn the curtain on a memorable campaign, as the Champions of the AIYFA Caledonian MacBrayne League wrapped up the league trophy without registering a single loss all season.
Led by Head Coach Jamie Graham, who was assisted by Archie Clarke, Oban Saints placed a lot of focus on development this season to lay down a foundation for the future. Performances soared, and the harmony of the squad acted as the glue that kept this young squad steamrolling through the season. They wrapped up the league title only halfway through the campaign in a top-of-the-table clash against Campbeltown.
An early exit from the Scottish Cup was only used as extra fuel by the Saints to keep going, who are already looking forward to defending their title next season, as well as making marked improvements in the cup competitions such as the aforementioned Scottish Cup, but also the West Region Cup in addition to festival trophies, such as the Newcastle International Summer Cup.
Saints’ commitment to the future and development of their young players was well and truly accounted for when two players earned selection for the SYFA West Region Team. Finn Clarke, one of five 2012 players in the Oban team, made the 2012 SYFA West Region squad after excelling as a right back, whilst midfield maestro Alfie Graham worked his way into the 2011 squad.
Speaking on the success of his side, Oban Saints assistant Clarke said:
“This was a season where the team not only achieved results but also began to shape its identity. With a strong team spirit, growing confidence, and young talent getting recognised, the Saints have a lot to be proud of – and even more to aim for in the year ahead.
“Our captain, Archie Lewis, played a pivotal role in leading our team. He set a high standard in both training and games and demanded his teammates follow suit.
“The coaching team are very happy with the progress our squad has made this year. The continued development and commitment the players have displayed throughout the year has contributed to a successful end of season.”
