Stirling Albion lift Challenge Cup after penalty shoot-out

Dumbarton U20s were denied a historic cup double after a late equaliser and penalty shoot-out defeat to Stirling Albion in the Challenge Cup final at Ochilview Park on 22 May.

Dumbarton began the brighter of the two sides, pressing high and looking to impose themselves early, but it was Stirling who registered the first effort on target.

Goalkeeper Zak Watson was called into action to save a driven strike from the edge of the box before producing another fine stop to tip a Kieran Breslin effort around the post.

As the half progressed, Dumbarton began to find attacking rhythm, stretching play effectively across both flanks. Jonny Ouaga provided width on the right, while Aeden Gilfedder posed the greater threat on the left.

Gilfedder came closest to breaking the deadlock, first going through one-on-one with Max Ogilvie, who stood firm to make the save, before twice cutting inside and firing narrowly over after beating his marker.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Dumbarton applying sustained pressure. Max McArthur saw two close-range efforts denied by Ogilvie, while Jon Dunbar curled just over from distance.

The match swung in the 52nd minute when Dumbarton were reduced to ten men following the dismissal of defender Brodie Davies, who was judged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity by pulling back JJ McIntyre who had beaten the defender for pace and gotten through on Watson.

Despite the setback, Dumbarton continued to play on the front foot rather than sit deep, maintaining attacking intent throughout the remainder of the contest.

Their pressure was eventually rewarded in the 60th minute when Gilfedder was released down the left by a superb McArthur pass.

After being brought down inside the box by Kyle Cringean, McArthur converted the resulting penalty, finishing low down the centre to give Dumbarton a 1–0 lead.

However, the advantage was short-lived on multiple fronts. Captain Murray Nicol was forced off injured shortly after, before Stirling gradually pushed for a leveller in the closing stages.

Dumbarton defended resolutely and looked set to see the game out, only for Stirling to equalise in the first minute of stoppage time when JJ McIntyre reacted quickest after a clearance dropped inside the box to head home from close range.

Watson between the Sons sticks had had produced several superb stops but his hesitancy to come for a cross ended with his side forfeiting their advantage late on.

The match proceeded to penalties, where Stirling goalkeeper Max Ogilvie proved decisive, saving twice as his side won the shoot-out 3–2.

Stirling had gone 3-0 up before missing two successive kicks to allow Dumbarton the chance to take the match to extra time, but Gilfedder had his final kick saved by Oglivie to take the cup back to Forthbank in front of newly appointed first team boss Steven Whittaker in the stands.

The young keeper made several good stops to deny Aedan Gilfedder throughout the 90 mins and again denied the Sons talisman with the final spot kick to win the cup for the Binos.

Both goalkeepers were outstanding for their sides, with 17-year-old Sons stopper Watson producing a save of the season contender to deny Kieran Breslin in the first half. The goalie got a fingertip to the Albion attackers bottom corner bound shot to divert it for a corner.

JJ McIntyre saved Stirling in the final moments of injury time, nodding home after Brandon Muir had cleared off the line for Dumbarton to take the closely fought tie to a shootout.
