Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Lochend Football Academy is a community youth football team whose primary goal is to develop young players. It was launched by Ian Fergus and Jimmy Urquhart in 2010 as Lochend Football Academy. Prior to that, it was a tiny grassroots organisation called Lochend Youth. The academy’s mission is to provide local kids with a safe environment in which to play football while honing their abilities, fitness, and teamwork.
The club oversees youth teams for both boys and girls across various age groups. It prioritises participation, coaching, and player development over professional competition. They encourage community involvement, fair play, and inclusivity. The organisation, which promotes youth participation in sports, is also registered as a Scottish charity.
Despite being a small club, Lochend has achieved some noteworthy success:
In 2024 their U15 squad won the Scottish Youth FA Cup, marking the club’s first-ever national cup triumph with a 3–0 win over Westdyke Community Club. Before the final, the team had already won several awards. They won five titles during the course of two seasons, including a double and a treble. Despite the club’s small membership, coaches attributed success to excellent coaching and rigorous training standards.
In the same season, the Under-14s reached the Scottish Cup final, finishing runners-up, showing the depth of talent across the academy.
This year, Lochend have once more achieved impressive national results, reaching the U14 and U16 Scottish Youth FA Cup Finals. They have shown steady growth throughout age divisions and were the only club in Scotland with two teams still participating in national youth cup tournaments concurrently.
Additionally, the club’s community service has earned it the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, showing its dedication to the local area.
Some players who started at Lochend have progressed to professional academies. For example, Rudi Molotnikov, later a player at Hibernian, played youth football with Lochend before moving to a professional academy.
