The English Premier League is in full effect with Manchester City currently in the lead, amassing a total of 65 points. Manchester United are not far behind, and the title race is on between the two. This season has been quite entertaining so far, complete with its twists, turns and surprises. The EPL is also one of the most successful and popular leagues globally, holding an abundance of international talents in its many teams. Surprisingly, according to Sportingbet, so far, the 2020/21 season is also the highest-scoring season in Premier League history, which means players are performing marvellously this season.
Amongst international stars, we also have many top Scottish footballers in the teams. Below we highlight five top Scottish footballers that are currently playing in the Premier League.
Andy Robertson – Liverpool
Robertson is definitely one of Scotland’s gems as he is probably one of the best wing-backs in the game. Along with Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Robertson holds down the defence for his team in the EPL, Liverpool. The 26-year-old had a crucial part in the Reds success last Premier League season, where they skyrocketed to the top of the table and won the title for the first time in 30 years. The Scottish international was integral to this triumph, and although Liverpool are out of touch this season, Robertson is still regarded as ‘the best left-back in the world’ by Jose Enrique.
Speaking to SkySports, Enrique praised Robertson: “If you talk about consistency and level of performance, this guy is unbelievable.”
“Liverpool play about every three days, and this guy always gives you a good performance, and for me, he is the player of the season for Liverpool.”
Kieran Tierney – Arsenal
Unfortunately for the Gunners, Tierney has been out since January 18 due to injuries. He will also be missing Sunday’s match against Leeds. According to recent speculation, Tierney is desperate to return to two big games against Benfica in the Europa League and Manchester City in the Premier League.
Nonetheless, Tierney is a wonderful asset to Arteta and the Gunners. The Scottish international is very authentic and true to himself and plays the way he wants to with regards to defending and attacking. The 23-year-old has earned great appreciation from his former Celtic coach, who praises the young star on how far he has come and established himself as a Premier League stand-out performer. Under Arteta, the youngster is only improving, and we can expect to see impressive performances from him.
Scott McTominay – Manchester United
The Red Devils have been quite busy this season, and it looks as if all their hard work has paid off. They reside in the second position, just behind leaders Manchester City, actively challenging them for the title. Manchester United have improved massively and McTominay’s progression, in particular, is certainly satisfying. At the time of writing, the 24-year-old is the third-highest goalscorer of the 2020/21 campaign with more goals than Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, Nemanja Matic, and Fred combined.
The Scottish international is blossoming into an excellent all-round midfielder, switching his capabilities from box-to-box midfielder to a defensive midfielder in seconds. Manchester United needed players like McTominay to bring back their former glory, and it seems he is now the type of player they would pay millions for. He is also definitely one of the best players to come through Carrington, along with Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.
